As the standard of care changes in veterinary medicine, as novel technologies and treatment options develop, we are challenged to keep pace and understand the many advances. This is particularly true of veterinary hematology and is the impetus for this edition. We begin our hematology issue of Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice with a discussion of the newest and most widely used in-clinic hematology analyzers. These bench top systems are often smaller versions of large capacity laboratory analyzers providing blood cell counts with red cell indices and either a five- or a three-part white cell differential. Equally important is the inclusion of a complementary article that provides information and suggestions for using these systems and for providing reliable hematology results. These two articles as well as those related to Coombs' testing, understanding the causes and consequences of neutropenia, and diagnosis and monitoring disseminated intravascular coagulation provide an overview as well as information about more recent studies and advances related to these topics. Major hematologic abnormalities that may be identified in small animal cancer patients, including increases or decreases in the numbers of circulating blood cells, coagulopathies, and plasma protein dyscrasias, are also reviewed. There is clearly a need for future studies addressing the risk and clinical significance of these, and perhaps other, hematologi
