Description

Bridging the gap between undergraduate and postgraduate knowledge and experience, this new full colour resource uses an interdisciplinary approach to help manage chronic conditions – osteoarthritis, Achilles tendinopathy, gout, rheumatic diseases, forefoot/rearfoot entities, stress fractures/reactions, cerebral palsy – in the lower limb and foot.

Each chapter includes sections on predisposing factors, diagnosis, impairments, function, quality of life and management strategies while highlighting any complex features of a condition which may present. The latest advances are discussed with suggestions for new paths of research – ‘future directions’. The text is further supported by additional commentaries from internationally renowned researchers who highlight the key elements of the work and provide a supplementary perspective of the particular clinical condition. A general view of the patient’s needs is offered throughout, connecting clinical realities to real-world patient experiences.

Management of Chronic Conditions in the Foot and Lower Leg is a comprehensive, practical tool that can be used to inform daily decision making in practice as well as to support those who build policy and management strategies in the clinical areas covered.

  • Clear content and structure supported by full colour illustrations
  • Includes less discussed conditions such as gout and cerebral palsy
  • Focus on pain, impairment, function, quality of life and management strategies
  • Critical reflections by experts highlight current clinical practice and thinking in research
  • Provides a sound interpretation of research findings
  • Features patient-reported outcome measures and health related behaviour strategies

Preface
The interpretation of the patient's history, the extraction of information from key laboratory and clinical tests, along with the decision-making process to find the best treatment solution for the patient's predicament, is a challenging but enjoyable endeavour for the clinician.
Nevertheless, in the past decade, there has been rapid growth in research activity focused upon risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment. In some instances, the growth has been bewildering and hence particularly difficult for clinicians to stay abreast of current thinking in each aspect of practice, and subsequently be confident in their decisions.
The book includes the following clinical conditions: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, stress fractures of the lower leg, Achilles tendinopathy, rearfoot entities, forefoot entities, and cerebral palsy. Thus not all conditions that might be encountered are covered. However, we believe that the book provides a sufficiently detailed account of a set of disorders that encompasses key changes to pathology in muscle, tendon, and joints that might be found across the majority of conditions affecting the lower leg, foot, and ankle. Our choice of material reflects discussions with clinicians, clinical researchers, and senior students concerning those conditions that would be most valuable to them. Furthermore, these enquiries extended to the level of complexity and comprehension that they wished to see in such a text. As a result, the book is not written as an early undergraduate text but rather for those close to being qualified or already in practice.
Each chapter is organized into sections that are consistent across the book, thus enhancing the ease that the book can be read. These sections include predisposing factors, diagnosis, impairments, function, quality of life, and management strategies. We have asked our authors to provide not only a discussion of the latest advances, but also to be thought provoking and to consider the less straight-forward features of each condition and provide suggestions for new paths of research. Each chapter is further supported by additional commentary from an internationally renowned researcher who highlights the key elements of the work and provides a supplementary perspective of the particular clinical condition.
Given the aforementioned growth in knowledge concerning these conditions, it seemed logical to find a group of authors who were highly regarded for their research and or clinical contributions to their respective professions. We are very thankful to our authors for sharing their expertise. They have devoted a large amount of their time, for which we are very appreciative and grateful. The authors represent a broad spectrum of professions, and all recognize that for the patient to receive the best possible care an interdisciplinary approach to their treatment is required, and this attitude is apparent throughout the book.
We wish to thank the people that we have worked with at Elsevier for their patience, support and kind attitude in all aspects of the publication process. Their advice and standards of excellence have been invaluable in bringing this book to completion. Finally, we thank those who read the book as it evolved for their critical comments and ideas for improving its content and presentation.

Foreword
Anyone working in or interested in healthcare provision, health policy, or health-related research will already understand the major factors that will shape the nature of health and wellbeing in the future. That you will have heard a great deal about the aging population , the increase in long-term conditions , and the obesity epidemic and so on should not blunt the very real impact that these issues will have on the lives of everyone. Much of future healthcare need will be shaped by these issues, but also by some of the activities that healthy people choose to engage in: running and triathlons remain the fastest growing sports in the world, and so we look set to challenge our musculoskeletal systems to the maximum whether we are healthy or live with the daily challenges of a chronic condition. Understanding the underlying causative mechanisms, the identification of and management of chronic conditions is already an imperative in practice, but it is an area that, given the issues ab
