TEETH - TYPES AND CARE
Adults normally have about 32 teeth-16 in each jaw-that are used to bite, chew, and grind food, marking the beginning of the digestive process. Teeth also play an important role in maintaining the contour of the face and in the appearance of a person, so that good care of teeth is an important personal health activity that must be impressed upon and taught to people from early childhood.
Types of Teeth: There are four basic types of teeth in an adult mouth. At the front of the mouth are the incisors-sharp, chise-like teeth (four upper and four lower) that cut food and hold it in place. In the normal mouth, the upper incisors overlap the lower incisors slightly when the jaws are closed. Behind the incisors are the canine teeth-larger, pointed teeth (two upper and two lower, on either side of the mouth) with deep roots that tear food and reduce it to manageable size for chewing. The upper canines are known as eye teeth. Behind the canines are eight premolars (two upper, on either side of the mouth and the same in the lower jaw); also known as bicuspids because of their distinctive double edges (cusps), these teeth begin the grinding and chewing process. Babies do not have prelomar teeth. In the back of each side of the mouth are the molars-wide, strong teeth that chew and grind food, preparing it for digestion further along the digestive tract. Most people have eight molars, though a set of four additional molar teeth “erupt” (emerge) at the back of the mouth in some people during adulthood, and are thus known as wisdom teeth.
Tooth Structure: The part of the tooth that rises above the gums (the gingiva) is called the crown and is covered by a thick layer of non-living tissue called enamel. Beneath the enamel is living ivory-like tissue known as dentin; this is supplied with blood from below and has nerve ending in it. The tooth narrows at the gumline in a portion of the tooth known as the neck; below is the root of the tooth, which anchors the tooth into the jawbone. Beneath the dentin is the pulp, the heart of the tooth, containing blood vessels and nerves. The root of the tooth is surrounded by a hard, sensitive tissue called the cementum, which protects the root and connects with the periodontal ligament, the tissue that anchors the tooth to the jawbone.
Tooth Care. The basic elements of tooth care (oral hygiene) involve cleaning teeth and between teeth to remove food particles that cause tooth decay, inflammation of the gums (gingivitis), and bad breath (halitosis); brushing teeth and flossing to remove plaque, the sticky substance that contains bacteria that eat away at teeth and infect the gums; regulating the consumption of foods that are heavy in sugar, which feeds the bacteria that attack teeth; and establishing a regimen of visits to a dentist or dental hygienist for regular cleaning and care of the teeth.
ORAL HYGIENE
Maintenance of healthy teeth and gums
Oral hygiene is more than running a toothbrush across the teeth. Proper oral hygiene involves closely paying attention to the teeth, gums and tongue. Neglecting any element of good oral hygiene can lead to tooth and gum disease.
Tooth brushing is the first step to proper oral hygiene. Brushing the teeth thoroughly at least twice a day removes food particles and harmful bacteria (plaque). Flossing is equally important; it serves to remove food that is trapped between teeth. There are several varieties of floss available on the market to accommodate all sorts of teeth; if nothing seems to work, a dentist can make a recommendation. The tongue must be kept clean as well, as it is a repository for bacteria. Brushing the tongue or using a tongue scraper keeps the tongue clean and healthy.
Oral hygiene also includes regular visits to a dentist. During a checkup, dental hygienists clean plaque and hardened buildup (calculus or tartar) from the teeth. Dental checkups may also include fluoride treatments, a preventive measure for strengthening the teeth. Similarly, polishing gives a pleasant appearance to teeth in addition to smoothing surfaces to which food and bacteria might adhere.

TEETHING
Pain children experience as teeth grow in
Teething accompanies the normal growth of teeth through an infant’s gums and is caused by pressure on the tissue in the mouth as the teeth come in. The first teeth usually come in fairly easily, and pain may be minimal. But when the molars begin to appear, at about one year of age, the teething becomes much more painful.
Most babies get their first tooth around six to eight months of age; but possibly as late as 12 to 14 months. Teething infants may have a small, pale bump under their gum. They may have increased drooling, bouts of chewing, a runny nose with clear mucus, red cheeks, some diarrhea, and they may be more fussy than usual. A baby who is teething may also have trouble sleeping, may refuse food, and may bite down on hard objects.
Remedies. To ease a baby’s pain while teething, there are many conventional and unconventional methods of treatment. Doctors recommend that parents should give a teething baby hard objects to chew on, such
