Description

This book offers a series of authoritative reviews on pain in psychiatric disorders written by leading experts. They discuss the complex interplay between pain and psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression and borderline personality disorder, as well as neurosteroids, epigenetic mechanisms and TRPV1, with a strong focus on neurobiological mechanisms and current and future therapeutic targets. Special attention is given to the importance of inflammation and the immune system as a common substrate in both pain and psychiatric disorders. The state-of-the-art reviews present both preclinical and clinical research, providing the reader with sound knowledge that provides a basis for further research and clinical practice. Pain in Psychiatric Disorders is of special interest to psychiatrists, neurologists, neuroscientists, pharmacologists and other healthcare professionals treating pain in psychiatric patients, as well as research students with an interest in this field.

Preface
Despite the widespread interest and concern over the nature and impact of pain on the well-being of patients, research into the causes and treatment of pain has mainly been confined to the provinces of neurology and medicine. And yet, it has been estimated that pain is co-morbid in approximately 50% of patients with major depression, a frequency not dissimilar to that reported for patients with anxiety disorders.
Against this background it is not surprising to find that there is a growing interest in pain and its connection to the pathophysiology of major psychiatric disorders. This is particularly relevant to the management and treatment of psychiatric disorders, as pain complicates the patient's response and recovery.
The purpose of this book is to present an overview of the complex, bidirectional interactions between pain and some major psychiatric disorders. To achieve this, the twelve chapters comprising this volume are divided into four major sections, commencing with the first chapter on animal models for the study of co-morbid pain and psychiatric disorders [ 1 ].
Because of the clinical importance of inflammation in the causes and psychological consequences of pain, the next section [ 2 - 4 ] summarises the role of inflammation that links pain to depression and other psychiatric disorders. The third section [ 5 - 7 ] deals with specific neuromodulatory systems including monoamine and amino acid neurotransmitters, endovanilloids/TRPV1 and neuroactive steroids, focusing on their importance both as key substrates driving pathophysiology and also as potential therapeutic targets in co-morbid pain and psychiatric disorders. The final five chapters [ 8 - 12 ] are primarily concerned with the clinical manifestation of pain in different psychiatric and psychological disorders.
The format of the chapters is similar to the four previous publications in the pharmacopsychiatry series. All the chapters are written by internationally acclaimed experts in pain research and ancillary areas. Every chapter contains key references to the latest research.
The editors are aware that there are many areas of psychiatry in which pain has been implicated but which have not been covered in this book. However, it is anticipated that this volume will provide a stimulus to others to extend the information on the impact of pain in these areas and thereby further open up the possibilities of research and treatment for the benefit of patients and their families.
