Description

The prospect of parenthood represents a milestone in anyone's life course and is often a period of stress and challenge. There are a number of significant mental health problems that can occur during the perinatal period, the consequences of which can be both enduring and, occasionally, life threatening. However, irrespective of the specifics of the clinical manifestation of a disturbance, the distress and misery that accompanies it has significant ramifications for the mother or mother-to-be and her partner and family.

Index
Foreword
Perinatal mental health is complex and diverse issue, which to date has not always been well understood or well managed. The impact this has had on the health and wellbeing of women and their families – and indeed the next generation – cannot be underestimated. Therefore I was very excited to see this comprehensive, evidence-based and accessible book, which offers knowledge and understanding into the range of perinatal mental health presentations. I know it will prove to be a valuable resource for both clinical staff and researchers alike.
As might be anticipated from a clinically focused book, the Editor, Professor Colin Martin, not only covers established areas of mental healthcare, such as postnatal depression, but he considers more contentious topics such as Couvade syndrome, eating disorders, body image, post-traumatic stress disorder, sexual dysfunction and obesity within the perinatal context. Another key area covered here is the relationship between mental health of the partner and perinatal outcomes. This book impressively accommodates both breadth and focus within its scope – a difficult goal, but one that has been achieved by assembling a first-class and multidisciplinary group of contributors.
As Chief Nursing Officer for Scotland (and a mother) I am well aware of the unexplained differences in care for women experiencing perinatal mental health challenges across the UK and internationally in areas such as screening. In common with all the major health economies, we are looking to increasing preventative investment in areas such as perinatal mental health as a way of matching growing demand with finite resources. This shift has to be based on robust evidence if it is to have the desired effect. I therefore welcome the contribution of authors from the international community; they help to present an inclusive and balanced (rather than parochial) approach to the major issues that concern practitioners at every level and at every degree of clinical engagement within this field of practice.
Perinatal Mental Health: A Clinical Guide is without doubt an impressive and high-quality volume. It will be attractive to the needs and interests of a broad range of practitioners and researchers in this important clinical area. While recognising the excellent skills of the contributors in communicating often complex themes in an accessible and engaging manner, I also give special mention to the editorial qualities and standards of Professor Colin Martin in bringing this book to fruition. He has marshalled together a truly international team of experts.

Acknowledgements
I would like to thank all the clinicians and academics who have generously contributed chapters to this book. The insights of these esteemed professionals into the field highlight the myriad of complex interacting factors that contribute to the many significant issues which currently surround and define perinatal mental health.
I would also like to especially thank two long-term research partners, Professor Victor Preedy at King’s College London and Dr Adrian Bonner at the University of Kent at Canterbury; they are both colleagues who have become valued friends. I am also very grateful to Professor Dame Betty Kershaw at the University of Sheffield and Professor Cynthia McDougall OBE at the University of York for their support and confidence in my academic work over the years – including this book.
Credit is due also to Phil Hutchins, Dr Mark Newberry, Dr Suzy Newberry, Dr Maggie Redshaw and Professor Olga van den Akker for their enduring friendships beyond the call of duty. Julie, Peter, Eloise and Alex Robbins get a special mention for being the distillation of wonderfulness.
A big thank you is also due to Mike Roberts at M&K update for his support for the production of this volume and to Maria Hampshire for her excellent attention to detail in copyediting and production.
