Dedication
This book is dedicated to my family, who had to put up with me during all the hours spent writing and reviewing this manuscript.
Thanks to all the physician assistant students I have had contact with over the years and to all the physician assistants who have attended my board review courses, without all of you this book would not have been possible. Thanks also to Carolyn Wiese, Eric Vangsnes, Janie McDaniel, and Sue King-Barry for reviewing parts of the book, your input was most helpful.
Preface to the Second Edition

James Van Rhee, MS, PA-C
As stated in the preface of the first edition many physician assistants view the PANCE and PANRE with fear and trepidation. I hope that the first edition of this book has helped a number of you in preparing for these exams.
As with the first edition there are sample questions throughout the chapters. These questions are to asist you in your retention of the material. These questions, while not typical of those found on the exams, are here to make sure you are understanding some of the major points. There is still a number of tables, charts, graphs, diagrams, and color plates in the book to enhance your learning.
There have been some additions to this edition.
• The on-line examination has been expanded. The number of questions has been doubled. These questions will provide you with a “real-life” experience of taking the exam.
• There are two additional chapters in the book. The pediatric chapter expands on the pediatric topics in the previous edition and puts them in one chapter for easy review. The chapter also has expanded the area of genetics.
• The second new chapter is in laboratory medicine. This chapter places many of the laboratory medicine topics in one area and expands the areas related to the complete blood count, chemistry profile, and microbiology.
I would like to thank all the people who have made comments about the book and made note of areas that needed corrections. While every author hopes that their book is perfect from the start it is not without the help of the reader that improvements can be made. A special thanks to the Wake Forest Classes of 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 who have been more than happy to make note of one of their instructor’s errors.
I wish you the best in your studies as you prepare for these exams.
