Description

“A fascinating book by Sarah Cimperman! Diabetes is certainly an epidemic of mass proportions that hasn’t been properly prevented. She provides sound evidence to support why detoxing and using nutritional supplements can help ward off harmful complications of diabetes. Her book guides you through easy-to-follow steps to improved health.” —Jessica Black, ND , best-selling author of The Anti-Inflammation Diet and Recipe Book “I’m a big believer in healthy eating and detoxification, and I agree with what Cimperman has to say about it in her new book, The Prediabetes Detox . I like her emphasis on healthy fats, and not just from fish, but also avocados, raw nuts, and coconuts. Fat has gotten a lot of bad press, but healthy fats support a healthy brain, beautify the skin, and are building blocks for vital hormones.” — Eric R. Braverman, MD , director of the PATH Medical Center and PATH Foundation “Cimperman has written a reliable, informative, and easy-to-follow guide for managing prediabetes. It is a beautifully written work that provides readers with a practical program of action and sound advice. The Prediabetes Detox is a must-read for anyone interested in improving their health and preventing diabetes. I am pleased to recommend this book.” — Marianne Marchese , ND , author of 8 Weeks to Women’s Wellness “I diagnose prediabetes regularly in my practice and usually have fifteen minutes to explain lifestyle changes.

Foreword
Our nation is in the middle of a serious epidemic, and I am not referring to whichever virulent flu is going around. Nor am I referring to cancer or heart disease. I am referring to elevated blood sugar (prediabetes and type 2 diabetes). As with most of our chronic illnesses, this one is clearly linked to lifestyle factors—what we do or do not put into our mouths and what we do or do not do with our bodies. The last estimate of annual sugar intake by the average US resident was right around one hundred pounds per year. Next time you are at the grocery store, look at the five-pound bags of sugar and think about having twenty of them in your pantry and having to consume them all within twelve months. You probably wouldn’t even consider consuming that much white sugar right out of the bag, but the average American does eat that much, partly because sugar is hidden in so many places you wouldn’t expect. Little wonder many people do not feel well!
Perhaps you, like most people, know you should eat more healthily but fear you’d be doomed to eating food that is boring or tastes bad. Personally, I would choose to give up a few of the best-tasting foods in exchange for a life without all of the health complaints I have heard from my patients over the last thirty years. In fact, it is primarily from watching what has happened with my patients that I have become such a proponent of good nutrition and less-toxic living. The more patient stories I heard, the bigger my backyard organic garden grew, the less toxic our indoor air became, and the more my sugar intake shrank. And I’ve been pleased to discover that healthy food can be delicious and convenient.
If you’d like to live well no matter what your age, this is the book for you. Dr. Cimperman will take you on a fantastic journey through your body. She will explain how your body responds differently to the various carbohydrates and fats in your diet. You will learn the difference between foods that cause inflammation (which underlies chronic pain, among other problems) and foods that reduce inflammation. You will also learn about common environmental toxicants that can sap your energy and contribute to fatigue, obesity, and blood-sugar problems. She will then show you simple ways to reduce your daily exposure to these toxicants and help your body get rid of those that are already present.
When I tell patients to clear various foods from their diet, like white sugar and white flour products, they sometimes ask what else there is to eat. Dr. Cimperman expertly handles this issue by discussing the foods that you can add to your diet to optimize your health. This should help you to expand your food-selection horizons, which will make it much easier to eat a healthier diet that will delight your taste buds as well as your cells. She then expertly covers the basics of nutritional supplementation that will help to seal the deal on vibrant health. I can say with absolute certainty that the diet and supplement plan contained in this book will help you lead a better life. Here’s to your health!

I’d like to thank my husband, Bruno, for giving me the time and space I needed to write this book and also for tearing me away from my work occasionally to whisk me off on amazing adventures. Thank you for always reminding me that work and play are equally important ingredients in a happy and healthy life.
I’d like to thank my mother, Janis, the epitome of a strong and successful role model, and my father, Dwight, the world's most supportive dad.
I’d like to thank my friend and colleague Dr. Noreen Lalani, who encouraged me to write my first article; Mary Arsenault, publisher of Wisdom magazine, who published my first article and gave me my first column; and my friend Juliah Lindsey, who encouraged me to write my first blog. Among them: my mother Janis Cimperman, my grandmother Lucille Lundstrom, Janna Graham, who taught me to love making meals from scratch (and Mollie Katzen, whose Enchanted Broccoli Forest cookbook was our bible); Juliah Lindsey, who has been known to add fresh ginger to everything (literally) and fish sauce to anything (even yogurt-based vinaigrettes with surprisingly good results); Dr. Michelle Qaqundah, who showed me how easy and fun it is to make sushi at home; Dr. Keely Killpack, campfire gourmet, who has been known to make the most delicious meals in the middle of the Oregon wilderness; my sister Jennifer Cimperman, who is one of the most creative and adventurous cooks I know; my mother-in-law, Méranie Lamarre, who taught me to cook fish and seafood (among many other things) on the beautiful island of Martinique; and my husband’s late grandmother, Jeanine Lamarre, who taught me the art of French cuisine in her lively kitchen in the French countryside.
I’d also like to acknowledge Dr. Walter Crinnion, who taught me environmental medicine in medical school, and Hannah Reich, for her words of wisdom during the publishing process. And I’d like to thank Jess Beebe, Jess O’Brien, Amy Shoup, Heather Garnos, Michele-Waters Kermes, and Angela Autry Gordon of New Harbinger Publications, along with copyeditor Brady Kahn and proofreader Elizabeth Kennedy, for their valuable input on this book.
