Preface
The purpose of any exam preparation study guide is to help you find the area of weakness in your knowledge base. You should already have a vague idea of which topic in physical therapy has challenged you in the past. It is not important that you memorize answers to the questions included in this book, only that you understand how to prepare and pass the exam. Careful study of this book and its associated CD-ROM will allow you to tackle these different areas.
This book does not attempt to take the place of the vast array of knowledge gained in course work and clinical rotations, nor should this preparation tool be used to cram for hours before taking the exam. Instead this text and accompanying CD-ROM should be used to simulate actual exam scenarios and find faults in your knowledge base. For this reason, we have divided this book into 6 sections:
1. Clinical Application of Foundational Sciences
2. Examination
3. Foundations for Evaluation, Differential Diagnosis and Prognosis
4. Interventions
5. Equipment and Devices
6. Safety and Professional
Each section has a wide variety of scenarios, diagnoses, patient populations practice settings, and types of questions designed to help you prepare for the national examination. References were selected primarily from sources and textbooks familiar to physical therapy programs across the country.

Examination Preparation
Remember, it is not important that you get the questions right when practicing but that you understand how to prepare yourself for the exam and your career as a physical therapist. You should consider several factors in preparing for the exam. First and foremost you should consider the actual material on the test. Your knowledge in the varied subject areas of physical therapy will be tested. Although cramming for this sort of comprehensive exam is usually futile, you may prefer to study in that fashion. Previous coursework, clinical studies, peer-group study sessions, and observation of experienced physical therapists over the years is what prepares you for this type of national exam.
The practice exams should be administered in the same environment as the actual national exam. Rooms should be quiet and at a comfortable temperature. Limit interruptions for the duration of your simulated examination. The CD-ROM included in this book is an excellent source for practice exams. It will randomly select 250 questions to create a practice test. Each practice test will have roughly the same percentage of questions in each of the six sections as the actual exam. If you are using the actual text for your practice, block o
