It is my pleasure to write the foreword to this book titledAtlas of Common Retinal Diseases in Nigerians. At last, a pictorial book of retinal diseases in the tropics is a welcome development in our sub-region. We have depended long enough on retinal images of Caucasians eyes and so an atlas on retinal diseases in Nigerians is a dream come true. Dr. T.S. Oluleye brings over 20 years expertise in ophthalmology and more than 10years expertise in the treatment of retinal diseases to bear in the publication of this book. Dr. Oluleye has a passion for teaching and when he brought up the new innovation of using IPhone with a +20D lens to take retinal pictures, he brought the teaching of difficult cases down to the level of the trainees for easy assessment and learning in a resource-limited setting like ours. The inclusion of some pertinent studies on retinal diseases has added more value to the book as it not only offers easy-to-understand pictures, but also offers some evidence from research work already carried out. I therefore recommend this book to medical students and doctors-in-training who will find this book easy to refer to while in clinic to confirm the type of retinal disease their patients have. I also recommend this book to consultants who want to regularly refresh their knowledge about retinal diseases. The book is easy to understand with very clear pictures. I hope this effort by Dr. Oluleye will encourage other sub-specialties in ophthalmology to do the same and bring up pictorial books on our various sub-specialties.

The atlas of retinal diseases in Nigerians is long overdue. It is important to document common retinal diseases in Nigerians. This will enhance teaching, patient education and management of such diseases. The medical students and the postgraduate students will find the book useful as a quick reference. The general ophthalmologist will also find it useful as a diagnostic tool. This book showcases some common retinal diseases in Nigerians seen at the retina clinics during a ten-year period of the author’s post fellowship training at the University College Hospital, Ibadan and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos. My colleague, Dr Rotimi–Samuel, a contributing author, also fell in love with the use of mobile phones for fundus photography. Over 90 percent of the retina pictures used in this book were taken wit h a mobile phone and a 20 diopter lens, a novel approach for taking fundus pictures in resource-poor settings of sub-Saharan Africa. A chapter of this book is dedicated to this method of retina examination which is set to overcome t he challenges of fundus phot ography in the tropics. Some major retinal studies are also summarized to help in the management of some of these diseases.

I thank the Almighty God for the opportunity to put this work on paper. I also appreciate my co-author, Dr Rotimi–Samuel, who accommodated me at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) during my sabbatical leave. Some of the pictures were taken during this period. Drs Ajayi and Ilo are appreciated for their contributions. I thank members of the Department of Ophthalmology, University College Hospital, Ibadan, for their support. I use this opportunity to thank my current Head of Department, Prof Ashaye, and the consultant staff for their encouragement. I also appreciate the ophthalmology residents for always challenging me to do more. To Prof Baiyeroju, who encouraged me into the retina sub-specialty, I thank you ma. To my family, I thank you for the support. My father and mother, Pa Samuel Oluleye and Madam Dorcas Oluleye, I thank you for the gift of education. And to my siblings, I thank you all.
