L ots of the foods we eat have both natural sugars and added sugar in them. Will eating sugary foods give us diabetes? The simple answer is no; but the useful answer is a little more complicated. Read on and learn about sugar and diabetes.

white and brown sugar

Sugars and sweeteners
L ots of sugars occur naturally in nature. They have names like fructose and glucose, and they are different combinations of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. All the sugars are carbohydrates.

P lants make carbohydrates when they convert the energy of sunlight into a food source through photosynthesis. They mainly do this to feed themselves, but some plants are better at it than others and create a surplus. Sugar beets and sugarcane, for instance get their names because they produce so much sugar it is easy for people to make their sugars part of the human diet.

Insulin inside of a cell

O ur bodies mainly work with glucose. We process glucose using a compound called insulin . Insulin converts the sugars’ energy and nutrients into forms our cells can use.

C onsuming some sugar is good for us, giving us energy. A lot of sugar is not so good for us. It can throw off the chemical balance of our bodies, rot our teeth, and do other not-nice things like making us gain weight. Unfortunately, a lot of us like sugar a lot.
