Introduction
Your Grandmothers’ Guide to Hispanic Remedies & Advice: The Curanderas Household Healing Traditions of the Borderlands is a product of the El Niño Fidencio Curanderismo Research Project , property of and authored by anthropologist Antonio N. Zavaleta, Ph.D.
This ongoing Curanderismo research project was established in the 1970s, and operates the most comprehensive website on Hispanic folk healing and Curanderismo available. Search on the Internet for: drzavaleta .com.
The project utilizes time-honored methods in field anthropology, including ethnography and video-ethnography; participant observation-based field work in Espinazo, Nuevo León, México, as well as many other locations in Mexico and throughout the United States-Mexico border and the Caribbean.
As the lead anthropologist and project director Dr. Zavaleta has studied Curanderismo along the United States-Mexico border and The Fidencista Movement for more than 50 years.
Your Grandmothers’ Guide to Hispanic Remedies & Advice serves to assist the average person to understand what Curanderas do and why people seek their help for both health and personal problems. It further serves as a descriptive guide for professional health care, religious and social-service providers, as well as many individuals who interact with Hispanics in professional settings.
This book is a conglomeration of many different sources and is sorely-needed resource for understanding the cultural realities and health disparities of millions of Hispanics in the United States today. This includes thousands of recent immigrants.
Grandma’s Remedies and Advice, further seeks to clarify, for health and social care providers, the importance of the role that cultural competencies play in provider interaction with Hispanic and other cultural minorities.
It attempts to fill the gap in cultural competencies related to the Hispanic population because there isn’t anything which is easily available to them in regards to Curanderismo. Health and social care providers must understand these aspects of Hispanic culture in order to better serve the Hispanic community.
This book is an opportunity to experience and study the many assorted cases they encounter in their work with Hispanics but never experience with valuable background information.
These cultural perspectives provide a rare opportunity for contextualized mini-cases based on real life experiences.
Additionally, Your Grandmothers’ Guide to Hispanic Remedies & Advice , provides the reader with a priceless view into the not widely seen or completely understood world of Curanderismo. This is especially true in that it provides us with an attempt to understand the mysterious world of Curanderismo practicing a unique blend of folk Catholicism and folk healing.
While often misunderstood by religious officials, health-care providers and social service workers, the practice and utilization of Curanderas , thrives in the United States and Mexico and throughout Latin America today. The Hispanic population, irrespective of socioeconomic level or education, maintains a widespread cultural belief in folk religion and folk medicine.
Wherever Hispanic populations are found the number of persons who consult curanderos, spiritualists, card readers, herbalists and many other alternative practitioners in the Hispanic community grows annually.
Please note that Curanderismo never serves as a substitute for the qualified advice and treatment by medical doctors, social care or religious professionals.
However, understanding Curanderismo , its beliefs and rituals, provides critical assistance to the interaction between professional caregivers and Hispanics in real-life scenarios.
Studies in cultural competency have clearly shown that consultation with Curanderas , when practiced alongside modern medicine, social, psychological and religious counseling, bridges the gulf of misunderstanding that exists between these two different, and at times opposing, belief systems.
While numerous religious symbols are introduced and discussed in this book, the book is not about religion nor does it promote religious beliefs or the recommendation of one belief system over another. Religious symbolism is an essential part of Curanderismo and is an everyday cultural reality for most Hispanics .
This book abounds with folk remedies and spells prescribed by Curanderas ; and suggests that we learn and understand them not use them.
This book does not suggest or promote that people in need visit a Curandera. What this book does is provide you with the most comprehensive glimpse into present-day Curanderismo currently available.
The popularity of Curanderismo , in all its aspects, is especially due to the burgeoning Hispanic media industry. The events occurring in the United States and Mexico, Puerto Rico or in Columbia today appear on Spanish-language newscasts in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, Chicago, and Los Angeles on the same day.
Hence, the Spanish language is a special culturally bond topic that most Hispanics share and the spiritual world is the glue that binds them.
Curanderas practicing their local, site-based, healing arts are now complemented by the availability and anonymity of private consultations. The boundaries of distance, access and culture in consultations are the strongest part of Curanderismo. People in need of spiritual help and healing, who would never actually visit a Curandera in person, consult them online with impunity. The privacy of Internet use has assisted in increasing the use of Curandera consultations especially in times when health care is more difficult to access.
In the United States, medical education has generally failed to meaningfully and systematically incorporate an understanding of cultural competency in its curricula as it relate
