The Strange Dream
A long time ago in India, there lived a king named Suddhodana and a queen named Maha Maya. They ruled Kapilvastu, a small yet prosperous kingdom in the Himalayan foothills. The king was kind and courteous. He had four brothers. Their names were Shuktodana, Amritodana, Dhautodana and Shukrodana.
One full moon night, the queen dreamt of four devas. They carried her to a lake and rested her on a soft bed. Soon, a white elephant came running. It was carrying a lotus flower. Suddenly, it moved around the queen thrice and disappeared. Next morning, the queen decided to inform the king about her dream.
“My Lord, I saw a weird dream,” the queen narrated the dream to her husband.
“What did the elephant do?” asked the king.
“It ran around me thrice and when I tried to catch, it turned into a puff of cloud and got into my belly,” said the queen.
“Strange!” the king was surprised.
The king immediately sent for the royal astrologer.
“Gurudeva, the queen is upset about the dream!”
“Your Highness! There’s nothing to worry. The dream is very auspicious.”
“What do you mean Gurudeva?”
“The queen will soon give birth to a son. The boy will be one of a kind. He will be famous world over! He will either be a great king or a renowned monk.”
The king and the queen were happy to hear the prediction of the royal astrologer.
“At last, God has listened to our prayers!” Queen Maha Maya said happily.
“Yes, my dear! I am very much glad to hear the good news,” the King said.

Buddha is Born
Soon after the prediction, Queen Maya got pregnant. The king was happy to hear the news. When the time came for the baby to be born, Queen Maha Maya left the palace with the attendants to go to her parents’ home. As per the custom, she should give birth to the baby at her maternal home.
On the full moon day of Vaisakh, Queen Maya was on her way to her parents’ home in Devdaha.
“I’m tired. Shall we wait here for sometime?” said the queen.
The attendants asked the palanquin bearers to stop for sometime. They stopped under the shade of two Sal trees at Lumbini. Suddenly, the queen felt birth pangs. She cried in pain. Her attendants helped her with the birth of baby. The queen gave birth to a beautiful boy.
“Ah my baby!” she cried.
“Listen, inform the king about this baby, now!” the queen ordered.
King Suddhodana was very happy and celebrated the birth of the baby with his people all over the country.
The royal astrologer was called for the naming ceremony.
“Let us name him Siddhartha!” said the queen after hearing the suggestion from the royal astrologer.
“Of course, my dear! This is a nice name,” said the king.
“Indeed, it is a nice name. It means one whose wishes will be fulfilled,” said the astrologer.

Loss of Maternal Love
The entire kingdom was wrapped in happiness. People of Kapilvastu rejoiced the birth of King Suddhodana’s son. It seemed as if the kingdom had every reason for being happy forever. But fate had something else in store for the kingdom and the little heir.
Queen Maya fell seriously ill after the naming ceremony. The royal physicians couldn’t treat her. On the seventh day after the birth of Siddhartha, the queen felt uneasy.
