Description

Is sex metaphysical? This is to say, does it have a purpose and a nature that is encoded in the very construct of the universe? These are the questions the author takes up in this day and age where most everything is up for grabs. This writing is not without an examination of sensitive issues and explicit terms. Think of it as a third way, if you will. It resides between the "fixed" identity of our declining religions and the "fluid" identity of the emerging L,G,B,T,Q movement. In that it presents to us all another choice. In the end, it is about a construct for sexual balance that any reader can understand and use as a guide for his or her life.

Preface

It was towards the later half of May, 1971, that I, along with my brother Marc and my friend Robert Birk, were sitting with Lao Russell at the University of Science and Philosophy, Swannanoa, Waynesboro, Virginia. We, and many others, were gathered together in recognition of Walter Russell’s one-hundredth birthday. Walter Russell (1871-1963) has been referred as the Leonardo da Vinci of our time and is renowned for his work in the arts, science, spirituality, and philosophy. Lao Russell (1904-1988) joined him and together they set up the University of Science and Philosophy in 1949. I was introduced to them in 1970 through the book The Man Who Tapped the Secrets of the Universe by Glenn Clark, first published in 1946. During those few days, Robert, Marc, and I had the opportunity to visit privately with Lao Russell. And I remember, in the middle of our discussion she said, “You have to sex it, you know.” Imagine, what does that mean to a twenty year old kid?

The purpose of this writing is to sexualize the universe. This is to say it is to come to an understanding that sex is not just physical but metaphysical ….That sex, or shall I say the sexual process , is the underlying frame, foundation, cause, pattern, nexus, template, given, 1 st principle, Capital T Truth, or structure of all things, i.e., that there is an actual order to things. Why is this important? Because we live in a rapidly changing world where it seems that personal opinion or personal choice is the new “God”—where anything goes as long you, or I, claim it so. It has been legislated in some countries, for example, that sexual morality is not something to be taught—the underlying point to that claim is that there isn’t such a thing as a sexual morality, only the diversity of personal preference. But, it ought to be asked, can a relationship or society survive without a moral structure? Unfortunately, we cannot answer that question from morality, or ethics, itself. This issue, of a morality or not, really takes up back to the question of an order to things, i.e., metaphysics. It is from here that we must begin.

Think of this writing as a third way , if you will . It resides between the “fixed” identity of our declining religions and the “fluid” identity of the emerging L,G,B,T,Q movement. In that it presents to us all another choice.

The Development of a Sexual Metaphysics
…there is not one moment in this universe, seen or unseen, where a man is not linked to a woman and a woman is not linked to a man.
Definition of Metaphysics

The title of this writing is The Metaphysics of Sex. What does this word metaphysics mean? What is it I am trying to get at? I am going to be using a process for defining metaphysics. First I am going to go to Wikipedia and list that definition. Secondly, I am going to the online Merriam-Webster Dictionary and list their definition. Lastly, I will endeavor to put the definition into my own words. So the pattern will follow.

1. Wikipedia
2. Merriam-Webster Dictionary
3. Author’s Definition

So when you see 1. Metaphysics … below, you will know that is from Wikipedia. 2. Metaphysics …that will be from Merriam-Webster. 3. Metaphysics … will be my definition. This way I don’t have to repeat each time where the definition is from. I will be using a number of definitions in this writing to ensure we are on the same page and will follow this same format.

1. Metaphysics : Is a traditional branch of philosophy concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world that encompasses it, although the term is not easily defined. Traditionally, metaphysics attempts to answer two basic questions in the broadest possible terms:

1. What is ultimately there ?
2. What is it like ?

2. Metaphysics : Branch of philosophy that studies the ultimate structure and constitution of reality—i.e., of that which is real, insofar as it is real. The term, which means literally “what comes after physics,” was used to refer to the treatise by Aristotle on what he himself called “first philosophy.” In the history of Western philosophy, metaphysics has been understood in various ways: as an inquiry into what basic categories of things there are (e.g., the mental and the physical); as the study of reality, as opposed to appearance; as the study of the world as a whole; and as a theory of first principles. Some basic problems in the history of metaphysics are the problem of universal s—i.e., the problem of the nature of universals and their relation to so-called particulars; the existence of God; the mind-body problem ; and the problem of the nature of material, or external, objects. Major types of metaphysical theory include Platonism , Aristotelianism, Thomism , Cartesianism (see also dualism ), idealism , realism , and materialism .

3. Metaphysics : The 1 st branch of philosophy—which looks to bring an understanding to the fundamental order of things.

In the definition I have provided, I am making an assumption—that there is a fundamental order to things. Is that a safe assumption to make? Given that all consciousness/thinking revolves around some type of logic or coherency, I think we have to subsume an order to things. Without an inherent order there can only be chaos. What this order is is a different question. What is before us now is the necessary of assuming an order. So when I say in the title The Metaphysics of Sex, I am assuming that there is an order to sex, that sex is not something disordered or even unknowable. Let’s look at the following quote. It is by Glenn Clark (1882-1956)— The Man Who Tapped the Secrets of the Universe, 1946. This was the book that introduced me to the Russell’s. See if you can capture the metaphysical implication involved.

[Glenn Clark, the author of that book, was speaking to the great philosopher/scientist Walter Russell (1871-1963). He said,] “You say you never studied physics and have read but few books in your life. Tell me how you acquired your scientific knowledge.” Dr. Russell answered, “It is because I always looked for the CAUSE behind things and didn't fritter away my time analyzing EFFECTS. ALL KNOWLEDGE EXISTS as CAUSE. And it is simple. It is limited to LIGHT of MIND and the electric wave of motion which records God's thinking in matter.”

Dr. Russell is suggesting here that there is a CAUSE behind or prior to EFFECT. So Cause, in this example, is metaphysical in nature. This means that Cause is the Order, the universal, the 1 st principle, the given, the “what is,” the ultimate reality, the frame, and the fundamental nature or structure. What are other words we can use to capture the essence of metaphysics? How about: Absolute Origin, the Capital T Truth, the Tao, the Central Organizing Factor, the Primary Source, the Intrinsic Order, or the Prime Mover. Even the word/idea “God” is metaphysical. Doesn’t it mean a universal/intrinsic order or ultimate creator? We might think of “God” as the Transcendent One, or something like that, but I would suggest to you that “God” is a metaphysical term. Taken to its logical conclusion, this Cause is not something that was created. It is what exists prior to creation. Nor can there be a time in the future when it doesn’t exist. It is the “always is.” This is what metaphysics is trying to get to—to that which is absolute .

Again, I will mention that we must and do come into the issue of metaphysics with an assumption, or is this a subsumption?—a something we must subsume in orde
