Gratitude This book - compilation of the articles inspired by Osho - is dedicated to our beloved master, Osho.
Introduction
S ome years ago, one of Osho’s sannyasins was brought to me for heart surgery. He had a serious problem and there was very little hope that he would live long. The other sannyasins, who had brought him, were a happy lot. There was no sadness or seriousness about them and instead of being solemn, they asked me if they could film the operation! What struck me was a certain glow that emanated not only from all the patient’s friends but also from the patient himself! It was certainly a glow of their positive attitude. It was a major operation and I was not optimistic about the patient’s survival, so I refused the filming. But nothing seemed to prick their bubble. Not only did they seem to perceive this serious problem differently, they had a positive outlook on death as well! A rare ideal in the world, today. The patient did extremely well during the operation and had a remarkable recovery. The positive attitude that the Osho sannyasins had, I believe, contributed a great deal to the patient’s recovery.
I have observed repeatedly over the years that the post-operative recovery time for each patient varies greatly and it is directly connected to his mind. If the patient is positive and believes he is going to do well, he does. Those who whine, moan and complain about every little thing, take the longest to recover. Some patients decide they are going to be out of the hospital in 10 days and that is exactly what they end up doing. Sam Pitroda put on his suit and tie 10 days after a major heart surgery and walked out of the hospital, fighting fit.
My wife, Madoo, who has been on a spiritual journey for over 30 years, wanted to visit Osho’s Pune ashram. When she asked, how she should prepare for the ashram, the sannyasins said, “What ever you know, the way you know it, drop the lot.” This seemed like a wonderful introduction to seeing the place. I accompanied Madoo on her second visit to the ashram. I am a cardiovascular surgeon, and being a man of science, I was extremely prejudiced towards what I conceived were karma cola gurus and ashrams. But a new dimension opened to me after I was exposed to the sannyasins from the Osho ashram. In spite of being cynical and jaded about things like meditation, I saw, after taking part in the meditations, that not only was Osho a great philosopher but he was a great scientist too! As Osho pointed out, the word “medicine” and “meditation” come from the same root. Medicine means ‘that which heals the physical’, and meditation means ‘that which heals the spiritual’. Both have healing power.
In the ancient times, it was possible to tell people to sit quietly and meditate. They could do it. Their life style allowed that. But in modern times, with the pace of life so fast, people are unable to do so. People today, have too many hassles, survival frustrations and high-achiever stress coupled with unidentified childhood traumas, to be able to do that. There is no human being today, no matter how wealthy, no matter how much he has achieved in his life, who has not suffered grief, pain, humiliation, anger, helplessness or trauma at some point in his life. It would be impossible to expect him to meditate successfully until all those tensions were resolved within him. So, for the modern man, Osho created a new format of what he called “active meditations.” The meditations were able to dislodge the negative, suppressed trauma within the person first. After dealing with and resolving all the suppressed negative memories and feelings, the person is then capable of meditating with a calmer mind and is able to concentrate. Osho has designed different kinds of meditation for different times of the day. Most of the active meditaitons are created by Osho himself. The meditations have a two-fold effect. Not only are they useful by themselves but they also help in the next step of meditation. It is an accumulative experience. Each part makes the sum of the whole and each part is a whole in itself. It is better that a person gets into the active meditations without any preconceived ideas. No preparation is necessary. The physical movements prescribed by Osho will do their work. One just has to follow the required directions. If anyone believes that people go to the Ashram to cruise, pick up people and participate in sex orgies, they just have to go to the 6:00 a.m. Dynamic Meditation in the Buddha Hall to understand the truth. The large hall is packed to capacity. People who are serious enough to get up at 5:00 am to get to the Dynamic Meditation are not there to make friends and influence others. I believe that they are there only, to make friends with their own Self and influence it in a positive way..
As a non-believer, I went through the active meditations, not expecting much. But as I went through them, I was surprised and even shocked at the junk that appeared out of my subconscious! I experienced feelings, I never could have imagined, existed in me.
Of course, every person’s meditation experience is entirely his own. What you experience in the meditations is what you bring to it. Osho said, “Medical science, physiology, psychology, are very immature in the sense that they only do their work on the surface of the human mind. They do not reach the center of the being. And because they do not accept the existence of any consciousness beyond death, they are completely closed, prejudiced against the whole tremendous effort mystics have made in finding the center of consciousness.”
I believe that the center of consciousness is as important for a person’s health as his physical body. Many diseases, including heart disease, would be greatly reduced if man was in touch with his center .
We use all kinds of help to keep ourselves physically healthy. We go to doctors, join gyms and go to fitness classes to exercise our bodies, we follow all kinds of diets, so why shouldn’t we use tools to keep our spiritual side healthy? Osho provides these tools. Specially, since it has been proven again and again by doctors and scientists that the mind affects the body in every way. Various experiments have been conducted by observing patients who are told that they have only 3 months to live. Those who believe the doctor and begin to live their lives behaving like terminally ill patients, die. But those who do not believe the doctor and go ahead and live normally, believing they can overcome their illness, live far, far longer than the doctor’s prediction of death.
It would have been interesting to see what Osho would have thought of the modern developments in medical science. He might have been pleased to see that modern medicine has acknowledged what he had said all along - that there is a direct connection of the mind with the body..
Osho said, “Modern psychology all around the world is doing something stupid: analyzing the brain. The mind needs no analysis. It is analyzing junk. It needs simply to be erased. The moment the mind is erased—and the method is meditation - you are left with a body which is absolutely beautiful. Lastly, I’d like to congratulate Swami Chaitanya Keerti for this book and for all the work he has done to spread Osho’s word far and wide. His dedication is really commendable. We hope the meditations in this book help you on your path.
So, you have nothing to lose but your junk. Joy awaits you, if you have the courage to take the journey.

About Dr. Naresh Trehan
Naresh Trehan was born in Karachi in 1947 the same year India was partitioned. His family moved to Delhi from Lahore the same year. Both his parents were doctors and they found a room to share with 12 other people, until they got on to their feet. They would cycle to see their patients. There he was educated in every way, learning to be streetwise and developed a love of Urdu shairi and ghazals. One gang in college adopted him and made him their official spokesman, because he was” from a big city and spoke English.” A baffled Naresh then found himself under this tough gang’s protection.
He met his wife, Madhu, when she had just graduated from High School and he was in pre-med. He would catch a train, standing all night, to come and see her over the weekend. They married in 1969 and left for the USA the same year. Naresh did hissurgical residency programme in New York University Medical Center and got his General Surgery degree.
