Description

You are here, that much is certain. You are alert that you are here, that much is also certain. Now these two ingredients are enough for yoga experimentation.' In this book, part of a series, Osho expounds on the essence of Patanjali's philosophy which is contained in his sutras. Elaborating on these, Osho says that though the sutras contain the key to understanding the self, they are 'just introductory, just a preface to the real thing'. The actual work, he feels, starts when one is 'ready to change, to mutate, to become new'. He maintains that the enlightened one has gone beyond the ego and knows the oneness of all things. Secrets of Yoga, the result of Osho's talks, is rich with insights from Osho's awakened consciousness. Replete with anecdotes, simple yet deep, the book contains his views on crucial issues like ego, death and spirituality. The voyage of self-discovery is enlivened with Osho's irreverent sense of humour. The book contains questions from various people keen to know themselves and Osho's candid answers that make for delightful reading even as they offer solutions to those mired in similar problems. Pithy and profound, Secrets of Yoga is an invaluable guide for those looking for inner peace and harmony.

PENGUIN BOOKS SECRETS OF YOGA
Osho defies categorization, reflecting everything from the individual quest for meaning to the most urgent social and political issues facing society today. His books are not written but are transcribed from recordings of extemporaneous talks given over a period of thirty-five years. Osho has been described by the Sunday Times in London as one of the 1000 Makers of the 20th Century and by Sunday Mid-Day in India as one of the ten people-along with Gandhi, Nehru and Buddha-who have changed the destiny of India.
Osho has a stated aim of helping to create the conditions for the birth of a new kind of human being, characterized as Zorba the Buddha -one whose feet are firmly on the ground, yet whose hands can touch the stars. Running like a thread through all aspects of Osho is a vision that encompasses both the timeless wisdom of the East and the highest potential of Western science and technology.
He is synonymous with a revolutionary contribution to the science of inner transformation and an approach to meditation which specifically addresses the accelerated pace of contemporary life. The unique Osho Active Meditations are designed to allow the release of accumulated stress in the body and mind so that it is easier to be still and experience the thought-free state of meditation.

Introduction
O sho is a drunkard.
Patanjali, as sober as a judge.
Patanjali is rational, totally scientific.
Osho is the irrational personified. He knows nothing of science, himself being a poet, a dancer, a comedienne.
Patanjali is painstakingly thorough, dazzlingly analytical, perfectly penetrating, minutely methodical.
Osho is a wild man, anarchist, genius of the absurd. He is a shit disturber! While Patanjali probes for ultimate truth, Osho enjoys being a perfect liar.
And so arises the big question: what do one of the foremost scientists of all time and one of the greatest gossips of all time have in common?
What they have in common is that both have transcended these very labels that we seek to put on them. They have gone beyond words, signs, illusions. They have gone completely beyond; they have disappeared into the divine. And, strangely enough, though they are gone, yet they are here. They play a game, and play it perfectly-for in their compassion, they wish to take us beyond.
Patanjali lived thousands of years ago. Osho is very much alive, a herenow master. In this series of books, Osho shows us the essence of Patanjali, that which is alive beyond time. And as he revives and reveals Patanjali s essence, so too his own light shines-and even our own potential luminous selves are conjured up out of the mist of our illusion. Patanjali is an alchemist. For the real alchemist, changing base metals into gold is just a fa ade, a cover. He is concerned with something immensely more valuable. He is uncovering, transmuting his own base metals into his golden, realized nature. The alchemist needs a cover because much of his work can be misused, and the alchemist himself can be persecuted by the narrow-minded masses.
Patanjali, the alchemist, has designed his message in such a way that if used wrongly, the black magician will be thrown off course, misled. The masses will overlook it completely. Only the sincere seeker can find the keys contained within.
Osho is the modern day alchemist. He cannot be misled, for he already stands at the peak. And, he is such that he cannot be misused, either by the black magician or by the idle tourist.
Here is a little anecdote Osho relates:
A madman of the way called at a shop and asked the businessman, What makes you sit there day in, day out?
In order to make profit.
What is profit? asked the madman.
It is the making of one into two, said the businessman.
This is no profit, the madman said. Profit is when you can make two into one.
Osho is the madman and his vision is diametrically opposite to us who are caught in the web of duality, the maya of desire. Our egos seek to divide, to separate, to alienate. In a thousand increasingly subtle ways we seek power, we seek to control others, nature, the process of the universe. The enlightened one has gone beyond the ego and knows the unity, the oneness of all things. The master points the way toward this oneness. What we must do is to make a one hundred degree turn; stop looking down into the valley and turn towards the highest peak.
Osho is an open secret, available to anyone with a real longing to know himself.
In this book, Osho makes himself available by reviving the essence of Patanjali. These sutras of Patanjali contain the keys to unlocking the self. Through making himself available, Osho makes the keys of Patanjali once more available. He gives us the keys in a modern form, removing the rust of time that has gathered on them. And, if the truth be seen, the sutras do not really contain the keys. As Osho states,
The essential keys can be shared but cannot be talked about. Patanjali wrote these sutras so that he could share the essential keys with you, but those essential keys cannot be reduced to sutras. The sutras are just introductory, just a preface to the real thing.
These discourses on the yoga sutras of Patanjali are just to bring that neglected thirst into the focus of your consciousness. This is not the real work; this is just introductory. The real work starts when you have recognized the thirst, accepted it, and you are ready to change, to mutate, to become new-when you are ready to dare to go on this immense journey, the journey into the unknown and the unknowable. It is just to create a thirst, a hunger.
In this book, we are blessed to have at our fingertips the words and silences of one who holds the keys, the true transmission. As you read on, make yourself available, open for this flavor. Allow your thirst to bubble up. Acknowledge your hunger and come to the feast.
One Secrets of Death and Karma

By directing the light of the superphysical faculty, knowledge is gained of the subtle, the hidden, and the distant.
By performing samyama on the sun, knowledge of the solar system is gained.
I have heard a beautiful story. Once there was a great sculptor, a painter, a great artist. His art was so perfect that when he would make a statue of a man, it was very difficult to say who is the man and who is the statue; it was so lifelike, so alive, so similar. An astrologer told him that his death was approaching; he was going to die soon. Of course, he became very much afraid and frightened, and as every man wants to avoid death, he also wanted to avoid. He thought about it, meditated, and he found a clue. He made his own statues, eleven in number, and when Death knocked on his door and the Angel of Death entered, he stood hidden among his own eleven statues. He stopped his breathing.
The Angel of Death was puzzled, could not believe his own eyes. It had never happened; it was so irregular; God has never been known to create two people alike; he always creates the unique. He has never believed in any routine. He is not like an assembly line. He is absolutely against carbons; he creates only originals. What had happened? Twelve people in all-absolutely alike? Now, whom to take away? Only one has to be taken away. Death, the Angel of Death, could not decide. Puzzled, worried, nervous, he went back. He asked God, What have you done? There are twelve persons exactly alike, and I am supposed to bring only one. How should I choose?
God laughed. He called the Angel of Death close to him, and he uttered in his ear the formula, the clue how to find the real from the unreal. He gave him a mantra and told him, Just go, and utter it in that room where that artist is hiding himself among his own statues.
The Angel of Death asked, How is it going to work?
God said, Don t be worried. Just go and try.
The Angel of Death went, not yet believing it was going to work, but when God had said, he had to do it. He came in the room, looked around, and not addressing anybody in particular, he said, Sir, everything is perfect except one thing. You have done well, but you have missed one point. One error is there.
The man completely forgot that he was hiding. He jumped; he said, What error?
And Death laughed and said, You are caught. This is the only error: you cannot forget yourself. Come on, follow me.
Death is of the ego. If the ego exists, death exists. The moment the ego disappears, death disappears. You are not going to die, remember; but if you think that you are, you are going to die. If you think that you are a being, you are going to die. This false entity of the ego is going to die, but if you think of yourself in terms of nonbeing, in terms of non-ego, then there is no death-already you have become deathless. You have always been deathless; now you have
