Spartacus was a gladiator in Ancient Rome. He was born approximately 109 BC and died 71 BC in Petelia, Italy. He was best known for leading the slave uprising against Rome, what was known as the Third Servile War.

You may have seen his character in the movie Spartacus, which won four Academy Awards. The movie was made in 1960 and he was played by Kirk Douglas. If you find this subject interesting, you might want to ask your parents if you can see this movie.

Gladiator

Not much is known about his early life. We do know that he was a Thracian who, as a young boy, joined the army of Rome. However, it didn’t work out as he had hoped. As he attempted to leave this army, he was caught and then sold, as a gladiator, into slavery.

His Early Life

Did he marry? Plutarch discussed this subject here, “They say that when he was first taken to Rome to be sold, a snake was seen coiled round his head while he was asleep and his wife, who came from the same tribe and was a prophetess subject to possession by the frenzy of Dionysus [the god of ecstasy], declared that this sign meant that he would have a great and terrible power which would end in misfortune. This woman shared in his escape and was then living with him.”

Did he have a Family?
