A BOUT THE A UTHOR
Gus Lloyd is a “revert” to the Catholic faith. After being raised in the Church, he fell away from any faith in his late teens. After giving their lives to Christ in a small, nondenominational Bible church, Gus and his wife, Michelle, decided to check out the Catholic Church again. Their lives were never the same.
Gus is a popular radio host and Catholic evangelist. He regularly speaks at conferences, retreats and parish missions around the country. After a stint in secular radio in which he worked nearly every format, he began a career in Catholic radio in the early 1990’s. In 2006, after 13 years as the popular morning show host at Spirit FM, the Catholic radio station in Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL, Gus began hosting Seize the Day on Sirius XM Satellite Radio’s The Catholic Channel. You can listen to Gus every weekday morning all across North America. To invite Gus to speak at your conference, event or church, contact him through his web site, www.GusLloyd.com .

I would like to thank the many people who have made this

Who Can be Saved?
Introduction
Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks for a reason for your hope.
1 Peter 3:15
Got a minute?
Anybody ever ask you that question? I’ve found that if they ask you that question, they usually want more than just a minute of your time - sometimes a lot more. And if the topic of religion or faith is in the offing, then you could be in for the long haul. That’s not the case with this book. In fact, one of the unique things about the book you are holding in your hand is that the introduction is longer than any of the chapters, because each chapter is only a minute long. Let me explain why.
I have been on the radio since 1979, and spent the last 20+ years in Catholic radio. One of the things you have to become good at in radio is being concise. When you write and produce commercials, you usually only have 30 or 60 seconds to get your message across. I know that sometimes when you’re listening to a radio commercial, 60 seconds can seem like an hour. But for the people who want to tell their story, it seems like an instant. And when you’re trying to impart the truths of a faith that has been around for millennia, it seems nearly impossible. But over the years I’ve managed to boil down teachings of the Catholic faith to a minute for airing on the radio. Thus was born A Minute in the Church .
All of the chapters in this book are scripts that air on the radio. In talking with a lot of people, I’ve found that this is exactly what people are looking for – quick, easy answers to common questions about the faith. It seems that fewer and fewer people today will bother to pick up and read a “full size” book. But a booklet with very short chapters is much more palatable. People will actually pick it up and read it. Isn’t that the goal?
In my first book, A Minute in the Church , I concentrated a lot on objections that many non-Catholics have about Catholic teaching. This book contains many chapters that tackle similar issues, but there’s also more this time. I’ve included chapters on common Catholic practices and things that many Catholics have questions about.
In my job as a talk radio host, I have the privilege of talking with people from all over North America every day. It is one of the joys of my life. I get a lot of questions, most of them from Catholics who never really learned about their faith and the reasons why we believe what we believe and do what we do. In Church circles, there’s a fancy word for that – undercatechised. I have to admit that I was the same way. Growing up Catholic, I never learned the underlying reasons for our beliefs and practices. Seems I was not alone. I would never point a finger at the priests and nuns and lay men and women who taught me when I was growing up. I’m sure they did the best they could. I probably wasn’t listening very well.
As I began to grow in my re-found Catholic faith, I wanted to learn how to answer questions and objections that people have against and about Catholicism. So I began researching and studying on my own to get answers. There are so many great resources available out there, and I encourage you to use them. I have found that when it comes to my faith, the more I know, the more I know I don’t know.
I always want to make it known that the short teachings in my A Minute in the Church books are simply a starting point. They are meant to give you quick, easy answers. My prayer is that, after reading about each topic, you’ll want to dive more deeply into the faith. I hope you’re as excited about the journey as I am!
Finally, I want to talk briefly about the difference between head knowledge and heart knowledge. Head knowledge is extremely important. We must be knowledgeable about our faith. That’s what books like this are for. But there is something far more important – heart knowledge.
