Description

A devotional to support and encourage pregnant mothers on bed rest.
They are told to 'be still.' What better time to spend with God as He helps them handle what they are given?

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.

-Psalm 4:8

Pregnant mothers on bed rest are often fearful, anxious, bored, tired, uncomfortable, hurting, lonely, stressed, and feel helpless. Yet, they can only 'be still' for their unborn children. In this vulnerable state they need God most. This devotional will bring them close to God as He carries them through. Each devotion contains encouraging Bible verses, insights from a mom who has been there and felt God hold her in her weakness, song suggestions to lift spirits and prompt worship, and tips for surviving bed rest.

Be Still Christian Song List
Dedication
I dedicate this devotional to my three wonderful daughters. You are extraordinary gifts from God. I am so glad He chose me to be your mom. Someday you will face challenges that will feel impossible to overcome, but if you look at the very beginning of your lives, before you were even born, you can see that God has always had a perfect plan for you, and He will carry you through.
With Love,
Mom

A Note from the Author
I lived in the hospital for eight weeks on bed rest before giving birth to my triplet girls in 2006. The days were long and often very uncomfortable. I was plagued by worries and just plain tired. What got me through was my faith in God.
Living on bed rest was a very hard, soul-searching, and remarkable time in my life. I started having contractions while twenty-six weeks pregnant with triplets. I went to the emergency room, not knowing it would become my new home for untold weeks. Even after I was admitted, I thought they would get my contractions under control, and I would leave again. However, the doctors felt it was best that I stay under their watchful eyes. I knew it was the best place for me, but I never thought I could do bed rest for that long. What I didn’t realize was that I wasn’t going to do it; God was. It was my faith in God and His care that brought me through the challenges of bed rest. He cared for me through my nurses, doctors, visitors, family, and friends. The verses my friends and family shared with me during bed rest became very cherished words that helped me through the tough days ahead.
Years after my girls were born, God put the desire on my heart to write a devotional for women on bed rest. I wanted to share with these brave women encouragement from the scripture, words of comfort from someone who had been there, and the love of Jesus. I slowly began writing devotionals when my daughters were three years old. Obviously, carving out time to write with young triplets was difficult. When my daughters reached kindergarten, I decided to go back to school. School and work slowed me down even more. Yet God still had plans for this devotional. So many women were going to be on bed rest who needed to hear words of comfort from their God. It is when we or our children are helpless, vulnerable, and scared that we find the most comfort from God—that is, if we let Him. Again, God put the desire on my heart to continue writing.
I pray you are blessed by the words of encouragement found in this devotional. I hope the Bible verses, my stories, the songs, and my bed rest survival tips provide encouragement for you as you spend your days on bed rest. I leave you with these words:
God doesn’t give us what we can handle;
God helps us handle what we are given.
You are loved, and you can do this!
—Stacey Pylman, PhD, and mother of wonderful triplet girls

This Is a Season, Not Forever
But I trust in you, O Lord; I say “You are my God.” My times are in your hands.
—PSALM 31:14–15
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.
—ECCLESIASTES 3:1
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
—2 CORINTHIANS 4:18

How will I ever survive being on bed rest? There is no way I will stay sane lying there day after day! I thought before being put on bed rest. When the day finally came, I realized it was something I had to do for a while. It was for the good of my babies, and I had no choice. I actually felt safe there because it was safe for the babies.
The key for me was remembering it was only for season—in my case the summer season. I remember sitting in my hospital room and watching the summer days slip by one after another. I mourned swimming in the lake, feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin, taking long walks, and celebrating the Fourth of July. I often joked that it was the summer that never was, but I knew I had many more summers ahead of me—summers with my babies.
Many times in life, God asks us to endure hardships for a season. Sometimes it is a season of doing without, sometimes a season of mourning, loneliness, or pain. Whatever the season, God promises these things: He will be there with you during this season, this season will not last forever, and out of this season, He will bring good. This season, your time on bed rest, is in His hands.

Bed Rest Survival Tip

Make a countdown calendar. Nothing feels better than crossing off a day or week. Write your gestational weeks on it and watch your progress. Write down special visits, parties, or events coming up so you have something to focus on and look forward to. Put your due date on the calendar so you can visualize the end goal.
