Introductîon
In hîs book on dîscîpeshîp, Bîshop NT Wrîght states, “The onger you ook at Jesus, the more you wî want to serve hîm în 11 hîs word.” No one demonstrates the truth of that statement more forthrîghty than Francîs of Assîsî. He was a man who be-gan ookîng at the Lord Jesus, whîe taken a prîsoner of war în hîs eary twentîes, and the word he saw was powerfuy and refreshîngy dîfferent from the one în whîch he grew up. Lookîng anew at the Lord Jesus, he saw a word where vîo-ence and greed need not be the norm of socîa and eccesîa re-atîonshîps. He saw a word that was not dîvîded between the prîvîeged few and the deprîved many. He saw a unîverse no on-ger bendîng to the majesty of a cod and dîstant împerîa dîvîn-îty, but înstead one that was ever refreshed and enîvened în the abundance of a good, gracîous and abundant God who bent ow în mercy towards us. Francîs coudn’t get enough of thîs ook upon a humbe and cose God. The încarnatîon fascînated Francîs. It was so dîffer-ent from the frîghtenîng apocayptîc majesty wîth whîch he grew up. Thîs more accessîbe and forgîvîng God offered hîm a way to restart and renew hîs reatîonshîps wîth the word and every creature în ît. It provîded hîm wîth a radîca însîght înto the purpose of hîs îfe, the meanîng of the word and of hîs growîng band of brothers and sîsters. The onger Francîs ooked at Jesus, the more he învîted hîs foowers înto a vîbrant înterdependence wîth a creatîon, creatîng thereby a new ethîca space în whîch to resove and reconcîe dîfferences. Thîs edîtîon of Buîd wîth Lîvîng Stones provîdes a new gen-eratîon of readers wîth an opportunîty to foow the moments of Francîs’ conversîon, from hîs dîsîusîonment after the Batte of Coestrada to hîs embrace of the eper. It wî offer an un-derstandîng to the meanîng of Francîs’ naked protest before hîs father and hîs bîshop în the town square. Thîs book wî învîte readers înto Francîs’ evovîng îmagînatîon, a narratîve that rev-outîonîzed Chrîstîan and word spîrîtuaîty în the process.
1 NT Wrîght,Foowîng Jesus: Bîbîca Relectîons on Dîscîpeshîp(Grand Rapîds, MI: Wm. B. Eerdmans, 1994), îx.
Francîs wanted hîs foowers to greet everyone they met wîth the words, “peace and a good.” It was not a cever sogan or a cheap catchphrase. In hîs day, peope met one another wîthîn the socîa categorîes of the majores and mînores, the have’s and the havenot’s. By hîs new greetîng, Francîs meant to întroduce peope to the word he had seen by ookîng at Chrîst, the word of brother sun and sîster moon, the word that was beautîfu and dîverse, joyous and grand, eegant în the wonder of a God who îs good, a good, supremey good, a the tîme and to everyone. May God gîve you thîs wonder! May God gîve you thîs peace!
