Foreword
I N THIS little volume we are presenting a different kind of book, one that contains the Life of Christ in word and picture. The words are the inspired words of the Four Evangelists woven into one complete story. This greatest of all stories falls into four convenient parts: the Birth and Infancy of Christ, the Public Life, the Passion and Death, the Resurrection and Ascension.
This book is so divided that it furnishes suitable reading for each day of the year. This division is based on “Readings from the Four Gospels” arranged by the late Monsignor Stedman, who lives on in the work of the Confraternity which he fostered with such marked success. Each open page of this book presents a picture and text for one day’s reading and meditation. This, in turn, is supplemented by a corresponding section in the Appendix under the title “Study Guide and Daily Practice” which should prove very useful and fruitful for schools, study clubs, and Confraternities of Christian Doctrine.
IMPORTANCE OF THIS BOOK
T HE LIFE , example and teaching of Jesus Christ recorded in the Four Gospels constitute a code of perfection for every Catholic. In the Gospels will be found the healing prescriptions of the Divine Physician of souls, the guideposts to eternal life, set up by the Divine Exemplar. Our Lord’s precepts form the Jacob’s Ladder of the Christian, reaching from earth to Heaven by which all may scale the heights of sanctity.
St. Ambrose writes: “In Christ are all things. Christ is everything to us. Hast thou wounds? Christ is the Physician. Dost thou need help? He is thy strength. Dost thou fear death? He is Life. Dost thou long for Heaven? He is the Way. Dost thou flee darkness? He is the Light. Dost thou hunger? Christ is thy Food.” St. Jerome, who translated the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures into Latin, said: “Ignorance of the Bible means ignorance of Christ.” So true is this that the Popes repeatedly have urged upon the laity the duty of serious biblical study, especially study of the Holy Gospel.
VISUAL INSTRUCTION
T HIS pocket edition of Christ in the Gospel is a companion volume to other publications issued by the Confraternity of the Precious Blood in similar format. This convenient harmony of the Four Gospels presents “the greatest story ever told” in concise form. Its clear type can be read with equal ease at home, in Church, or while traveling. Illustrations by the same able artist whose drawings enrich “My Daily Psalm Book” contribute to a clearer understanding of the text. The noted Armenian artist, Ariel Agemian, has created these outstanding examples of Christian art expressly and exclusively for this book. There are 170 pictures which illustrate the various teachings and events of the life of the Divine Master. In paging through this volume you become an eyewitness of the life of Jesus.
LOOK AND LEARN
L EARN from this book the gospel story of the Master’s Life; meditate upon this record of the Master’s words. You will note that He speaks to you. He proclaims: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, the meek, those who mourn, those who hunger and thirst for justice, the merciful, the pure of heart, the peacemakers, and those who suffer persecution.” Follow the path of Christ’s teaching that you may experience the fulfillment of His promises. Obedience to Him will bring you to the “kingdom of Heaven” wherein you will “be comforted” and satisfied, obtain mercy, see God and be called the children of God.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
T HIS volume is suited to many purposes. It may be employed as private, spiritual reading, as a school text, and as material for the work of study groups. When used in conjunction with the “Study Guide” found in the Appendix it provides a complete system and schedule of meditation. The illustrations will aid in forming the “composition of place” recommended by St. Ignatius; the text of the Gospel and the “Study Guide” will furnish material for reflection, application and resolution. Our hope is that the faithful will find it helpful in perfecting their Catholic lives by assisting them in their “imitation of Christ.” In presenting this first edition of Christ in the Gospel we respectfully adopt, as our own, the words of Pope Benedict XV: “Our one desire for all the Church’s children is that being saturated with the Bible, they may arrive at the all surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ.”
GRATEFUL ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
T O HIS Excellency, Most Reverend Thomas E. Molloy, S.T.D., we are deeply indebted for the gracious encouragement he has afforded us.
To the Reverend John A. O’Brien, Ph.D., of Notre Dame University we express our sincere appreciation of his painstaking labor in preparing the “ Study Guide .”
To the Sisters Adorers of the Precious Blood we offer our heartfelt thanks for their fine spirit of co-operation and ever ready assistance in proofreading the manuscripts—another example of their devotion to the “Word of God” written in letters of red—the Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ.

I N THE BEGINNING was the 1 Word, and the Word was with God; and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was made nothing that has been made. In him was life, and the life was the 2 light of men. And the light shines in the darkness; and the darkness grasped it not.
John Came to Witness This Truth
There was a man, one sent from God, whose name was John. This man came as a witness, to bear witness concerning the light, that all might believe through him. He was not himself the light, but was to bear witness to the light.
It was the true light that enlightens every man who comes into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
How Jesus Becomes Our Brother
But to as many as received him he gave the power of becoming sons of God; to those who believe in his name: who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. And we saw his glory—glory as of the only-begotten of the Father—full of grace and of truth. John bore witness concerning him, and cried, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who is to come after me has been set above me, because he was before me.’”
We Are Called to Share His Life
And of his fullness we have all received, grace for grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has at any time seen God. The only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has revealed him.

INTRODUCTION to GOSPELS
DEC. 2 or June 2
I NASMUCH AS MANY have undertaken to draw up a narrative concerning the things that have been fulfilled among us, even as they who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have handed them down to us, I also have determined, after following up all things carefully from the very first, to write for thee, most excellent Theophilus, an orderly account, that thou mayest understand the certainty of the words in which thou hast been instructed.
John’s Birth Foretold
In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zachary, of the course of Abia; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. Both were just before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord. But they had no son, for Elizabeth was barren; and they were both advanced in years.
As Zachary Prays for Redeemer
Now it came to pass, while he was officiating in the order of his course as priest before God, according to the custom of the priest’s office, that he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord to burn incense. And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.
And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the right of the altar of incense. And Zachary, seeing him, was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zachary, for thy petition has
