Introduction
This book began as two pieces of work – a Lent discipline, written for The Year of Justice and Care in the Lichfield diocese, and a Stations of the Cross, written for a congregation in South Tyneside. From there it grew and grew.
Our intention has been for this to be a resource book, so while there are some complete liturgies included, most of the material consists of the stuff that liturgies are made of – stories, prayers, biblical reflections, songs and responses.
The material is arranged chronologically, and we have tried to classify it into types for ease of reference. There are also pieces that can be used in a number of contexts, according to local needs.
Our grateful thanks to all our contributors for the rich and imaginative material they have sent us. It has been a joy to edit this book.
Special thanks are due to a number of people; to Bernadette and Pete Atkins for proof reading and wise comments; to John Polhill for his encouragement; to Gary Polhill and Louise Hayward for their commitment to environmental issues; to Jane Darroch-Riley, Alex Thompson, Tri Boi Ta and Sandra Kramer at Wild Goose Publications for their support, skills and encouragement, and particularly to Neil Paynter for his sensitive and competent editing and cheery e-mails.
Working together has been a learning process for both of us. Working on a common task builds not only community, but also negotiating skills and books.
Ruth Burgess and Chris Polhill, August 2004

Shrove Tuesday

A short liturgy for Shrove Tuesday
For this liturgy you will need the following ingredients: flour, salt, milk, an egg; and the following tools: a mixing bowl and a whisk.
Reader 1:  Come with me, come wander, come welcome the world, Where strangers might smile or where stones may be hurled; Come leave what you cling to, lay down what you clutch And find, with hands empty, that hearts can hold much.
