Description

In the last half century, contemporary Catholic moral theology has developed at a rapid pace. Franciscan scholars have played a major part in this renewal of contemporary moral theology. Yet, these moral insights from the Franciscan tradition have, to a great extent, been overlooked by the English speaking world since many of the works have not been available in English. The authors of this volume of essays hope that this contribution on the Franciscan moral vision will help to broaden the conversation regarding moral theology and continue the work already accomplished by the many authors working in non-English languages. Scholar contributors to this volume of essays include Joseph Chinnici, Kenan Osborne, Thomas Shannon, Thomas Nairn and Mary Beth Ingham.

In theLîgnum VîtaeSt. Bonaventure presented a serîes of medîta-tîons on the mystery of Chrîst’s roe în eadîng humankînd to God. By învîtîng hîs readers to medîtate on the tweve centra “fruîts” în the îfe of Chrîst, Bonaventure expressed hîs desîre to “enkînde affectîon,” “shape understandîng,” and make an “împrînt” on the memory of those who hoped to be a “true worshîpper of God and dîscîpe of Chrîst” and to know and ove Chrîst as the “tree of îfe” (SeeThe Tree of Lîfe, proogue).
In the staîned gass wîndow on the cover, Bonaventure îs depîcted wrîtîng thîs spîrîtua text, on the rîght, whîe în conversatîon wîth hîs contemporary Thomas Aquînas who îs hodîng hîsSumma, a text whîch presents an aternatîve path înto the mystery of God and Chrîst. The wîndow îs one of a serîes of sîx teîng the story of the îfe of St. Bonaventure, as suggested through some of the texts he wrote, în the maîn chape on the campus of St. Bonaventure Unîversîty.
INTRODUCTION
In the ast haf century, contemporary Cathoîc mora theoogy has deveoped at a rapîd pace. Heedîng the ca 1 of the Second Vatîcan Councî, Cathoîc mora theoogîans have reated theîr ied of study more cosey to bîbîca stud-îes, systematîc theoogy, spîrîtua theoogy, and sacramenta theoogy. Emphasîs on the human person rather than sîmpy on the actîons that peope perform has become especîay îm-portant în contemporary vîrtue ethîcs. Mora theoogy îs no onger wedded to a neoschoastîc phîosophy, as contempo-rary wrîtîngs on moraîty gîve evîdence of a varîety of phîo-sophîca and theoogîca dîmensîons.

Francîscan schoars have payed a major part în thîs renewa of mora theoogy. José Antonîo Merîno, for exam-pe, has presented the ethîca theoogy of Bonaventure în a contemporary way, demonstratîng why the saînt’s person-2 aîstîc approach to ethîcs can speak to us today. The same voume expaîns how John Duns Scotus offers a mora the-oogy whîch not ony shows us how to îve (vîvîr) but aso how to îve wîth others (convîvîr).
