Description

I would have never chosen to have cancer, but I am so glad that I walked that road because of what God showed me during that time.

Each person deals with difficult challenges during their lives. In some instances, they may think they can’t feasibly take one more step. Circumstances may leave them feeling alone. Author Paula Gower was faced with the most difficult journey of her life in 2014 when she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. She had a difficult decision to make. Will she turn away from God? Or will she run toward him?

In I Saw God in …, Gower relives her journey with cancer and reveals the ways she saw God during this time. She saw him in many forms. Some days she saw God in her friends; other days she saw God in complete strangers. He showed up in her family, and he showed up in the strangest of places.

Through this compilation of reflections, Gower demonstrates how God knows what’s best for each of us during our unique journey. If you allow him, he will show up. I Saw God in … offers personal testimony to guide you through the ways you can allow God into your life during your challenges.

CHAPTER 1

I Saw God in a Phone Call

It had been five years since my last mammogram. Why? I cannot explain. You

don’t ever think you will be the one with cancer. It will be someone else, but not

you. A dear friend of mine possibly saved my life by making me pick up the phone

and make that first phone call to my doctor. When my friend Janet Smith heard

that it had been five years since my last mammogram, she encouraged me to make an

appointment. Sometimes you feel like that call can wait until tomorrow; then tomorrow

comes, and it gets pushed back to the next day. We’ve all done it, in some manner. Maybe

it’s even as simple as mowing the lawn or unloading the dishwasher or filing your taxes,

but we all put off things that we don’t enjoy. It took five varying days of Janet coming

into my classroom to ask me if I’d made my appointment before I finally did. She took

my phone and pulled up the number so I wouldn’t have any excuses.

With that phone call and mammogram, we found out that there was something

there. What I didn’t know was that God had a different path for me. My loving, caring

Father was aware of my diagnosis long before I was aware of it. In His sovereignty, He

placed specific people, each with a unique and meaningful purpose, into my path at

varying points of my journey to take my hand and guide me through the difficult

steps I had to take. He gave people different jobs, but each job was meaningful

in its own way. God’s hand was evident from the initial phone call all the way to

the very end of this journey. I have learned that God is with me when I receive

exciting and good news and when I receive news that will shake me to the core.

Whatever the outcome would be, I trusted in His hand.

For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be

our guide even to the end. (Psalm 48:14)

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your love,

O Lord, endures forever. (Psalm 138:8)
