Introduction
Identity, purpose, and legacy all come from God. How so? God is the Creator. He has plans for our lives and eternity is in his hands. The Bible says that God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world, and that we should be holy and blameless in his sight (Ephesians 1:4 AMPC).You exist as a result of God’s creative act. We have been “predestined according to the purposes of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will” (Ephesians 1:11 ESV). God’s will is his good plan for your life. This book invites you to the divine will of God. God calls us to live from him. God calls us to live lives that please him and are right. Living God’s will is the call of everyone. In living the will of God, we take his advice found in the Bible. There are things only realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and who we access with confidence through our faith in him (Ephesians 3:11–12 ESV). In Christ are eternal promises for our glory and God’s praise. Jesus is the way to the life that God is pleased with, so we follow him while we live out our time on earth. We’re renewed when we believe in the Son of God.
The Bible says that whoever drinks the water Jesus gives will never thirst (John 4:14 NIV). Indeed, the water he gives becomes in them “a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14 NIV). My prayer for you is that you will take and drink the water that God gives, that it might become to you eternal life. The water God gives is life, and life abundant in Christ Jesus (John 10:10 ESV). Gleaning from the prayer of Paul for the Ephesians, I pray that God
out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:16–19 NIV)
God is calling us to his fullness by the power of the Spirit.
Jesus came that we may have life, and have it to the full (John 10:10 NIV). Who we are is solely realized in him. The Bible says that we are new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV). God wants to form us to that end. God wants what is mortal to be swallowed up by life. Paul writes, “He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Holy Spirit as a guarantee”(2 Corinthians 5:4–5 ESV). This book is an invitation that you may be restored to God. Regardless of your age or spiritual level, there is something in here for you. You are called by God for his good work and you bear fruit only in Christ.
God planned our lives and it is in our interest to know what his desires are. One of the things that God wants is that we grow. Following Christ calls us to “grow up in every way into him who is the head” (Ephesians 4:15 ESV). This means that we have to undergo a change—a process of development and renewal. Over time, maturity takes place and we bear fruits by living the will of God. We become so much more if we understand who we are. Knowledge of self is a great foundation for purpose. If you don’t know who you are, you don’t see where you are going. God wants us to live knowing where we’re going. Jesus lived a life where he knew who he was and what he had to do. The same call is for us. King Jesus lived a life of example for us and brought honor to God. I want us to follow him because Jesus shows us how our lives can glorify God. In God’s plan of salvation, all people come to him by faith in Christ Jesus and become children of God. When we become children of God, our lives are testimonies of Jesus.
God intricately formed us for far more than we understand. The identity I talk about in this book is rooted in the profoundness of God as Creator and Father, who loves and knows us beyond what we can comprehend. We know so little in comparison to what God has planned. The Bible says, “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways’’ (Romans 11:33 ESV). Beyond measure, God has thought of you and planned good things that you may walk in them. His will for your life is something you should consider. Think about it!
God’s ways are higher (Isaiah 55:9 ESV). His ways are deep mysteries. The Bible says that God works “wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure” (Isaiah 25:1 ESV). There is a definite plan, and much about you that only God knows. We understand more and more about ourselves by walking in God’s ways. In Exodus, we find Moses saying to God, “Please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight” (Exodus 33:13 ESV). God is willing. He wants us to faithfully relate to him by walking with him. What God wants for you is a manifold of the mystery, wisdom, and the Father’s blessing from before time. God’s way is the only way to live. We are called to live in knowledge and fear of him. We please God when we obey his voice for our lives.
Paul says that “at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace” (Romans 11:5 ESV). There is a remnant of every man and woman who believes in Jesus Christ. God calls all of us to relationships with his Son. God is calling us back to our true identities according to his decreed word in the beginning that humans should reflect the image of their creator. In the beginning, God said,
Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created h
