PREFACE
The contents of this book are the result of a study, prompted by a sermon in which a preacher mentioned that the giants in Canaan, the Nephilim, were the result of fallen angels having children with human women. Using the bible alone, without the benefit of other books written on the topic, except a Strong’s concordance for clarity of word meanings, I was inclined to determine whether or not that might be true.
I have found that the Holy Spirit is the only teacher needed and what I have come to understand seems the most rational explanation of the Nephilim. I have also found that much insight is given regarding theories I have heard in sermons, concerning other biblical matters over the years. The result is a short book with insights gleaned from the bible concerning creation, the garden, the Nephilim and the gospel.
It is clear that the Genesis account of creation does not seek to explain the minutiae of the creative process. It assumes the readers understand that there is an omnipotent God at work, and that He can do that which the human mind cannot understand. Genesis therefore, is not an attempt to convince us of what the truth is, but simply states, in a matter of fact way, the story we need to better understand the bible, the gospel and who we truly are created to be. Specific details are not always given, but the general outline is, hidden within which is a wealth of information and principles that are of great benefit to us.
This book is best read slowly and thoughtfully, using a bible to reference highlighted areas to give context to the passages.
I hope this work will benefit the reader in some way.
CHAPTER 1
Creation
Imagine a vast ocean made up of innumerable drops of water. Now imagine taking one drop of water out of that ocean. The vast ocean represents the endlessness of eternity and the drop of water represents a finite measurable speck, a piece of something much greater that we will call time. Time is akin to a drop of water from the ocean because it is measurable, understandable and finite. It has a clearly defined “beginning and end”.
History is the journey of mankind in time. All of human history is confined within time, even though there is also a much larger reality that exists outside of it. The beginnings of the history of time and mankind are both highlighted in the book of Genesis.
The God of the bible is revered as a king; a King above all kings. He is king over matter, time and eternity! Like all kings, He has a kingdom, a territory over which He rules and reigns. He is eternal and exists in eternity, while, because of His nature, simultaneously co-habits in time.
It was the sin of satan in eternity that prompted the creation of the dimension called time, so that he could be held in a finite space awaiting his final judgment, as the blight he caused in perfection was removed. The Bible teaches that He cast some of His rebellious creatures (fallen angels) who were made in eternity, into time to await judgment 1 ; the culmination of which negates the continued need for time and re-establishes eternity as the only dimension of existence once again. The finality of time speaks to the absolute end of rebellion against God and against His plans and purposes!
For the sake of simplicity, let us divide time into three distinct periods, pre-Fall, post-Fall and post-Christ. Pre-Fall refers to all that time before the sin in the garden; post-Fall refers to that time after the fall but before Christ. Post Christ is the time we commonly call A.D. (anno domini) the period after the fall, and after Christ’s birth, death and resurrection. It is at the end of the post-Christ period culminating in the judgment that time and the effects if the fall will cease to continue to exist.
God is a spirit 2 and the Father of all spirits 3 , who, by extension, were made to exist for an eternity. A spirit is a living being with consciousness, a mind, will, emotions and intelligence, which may exist with or without a physical body.
God has always desired to have children, little ones made in His image and after His likeness (spirits), with whom He could have relationship. It is for this reason He made man (referring to both male and female humans), not through randomness and chance, not for them to have religious pursuits, but to be in His image and in relationship with Himself.
Genesis 1 and 2 each gives a different, not contradictory, perspective on the creation story with Genesis 1 giving a very compressed version and Genesis 2 adding some details to the overall picture. Genesis 1:1 says that “ in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (emphasis mine).” This passage makes it clear that there was a clearly defined point for the beginning of time and what we call matter (the heavens and the earth). Importantly, both visible and invisible things that were made were not made from that which already existed, but came into being by the power of the word of God 4 . What that passage does not tell us is how long the heavens and earth existed in a state of chaos before the decision was made to start the processes that would make life possible on the earth. It may have been seconds or millions or billions of years, we simply do not know, but once the days of creation begin, the bible teaches that they occurred over 24 hour units of time; literal days.
In Genesis 1:3 God creates light and then separates it from darkness, calling the light good. By omission it seems to hint to the fact that darkness is not good. It also highlights that the history of time began in darkness, chaos and confusion. Creating and separating light from darkness was the end of the first day. This separation of light from darkness speaks to the fact that some undesired mixing of two incompatible things had taken place. It perfectly mirrors satan’s act of rebellion in heaven. A separate reality emerged called sin, which would seemingly obscure light (holiness and truth) and seems to reflect the fact that all creation in the dimension of time would be subject to the cycles or influences of light and dark, good and evil or varying shades of light. We know that God is light 5 and there is no darkness in Him, so this darkness is representative of something that exists outside of Gods holiness. Maybe that is why He pulled it out of eternity where it was first formed and confined it to the temporal dimension called time. Note too, that this ‘first day’ existed even without the creation of the markers of time, the sun, moon and stars; for time continues to move even if we lack the means to measure it. The movement of the sun, moon and stars only exist to reveal the greater unseen reality of the passage of time.
On the second day God creates the firmament or the heaven that exists beneath heaven i.e., the skies.
On the third day God created dry ground, separating it from the seas that previously covered it. Genesis 1:11 goes on to tell us that God then commanded grass, herb yielding seed and fruit trees to bring forth after its kind. This command establishes a principle for all living things created of matter and in time, that once made, continued multiplication of the species would be by the reproductive processes God built into the species and those species would produce after their kind. This suggests that one of a kind does not become another of a different kind as some in the scientific community teach and would have us think. An apple cannot, with enough time, become a pumpkin for instance. This firmly establishes a principle of classes in creation with clearly defined boundaries for procreation, in which the offspring would be only after the kind of the species. We see the reinforcement of this princip
