Description

The first comprehensive resource for pastoral care in the Jewish tradition—and a vital resource for counselors and caregivers of other faith traditions.

The essential reference for rabbis, cantors, and laypeople who are called to spiritually accompany those encountering joy, sorrow, and change—now in paperback. This groundbreaking volume draws upon both Jewish tradition and the classical foundations of pastoral care to provide invaluable guidance.

Offering insight on pastoral care technique, theory, and theological implications, the contributors to Jewish Pastoral Care are innovators in their fields, and represent all four contemporary Jewish movements.

This comprehensive resource provides you with the latest theological perspectives and tools, along with basic theory and skills for assisting the ill and those who care for them, the aging and dying, those with dementia and other mental disorders, engaged couples, and others, and for responding to issues such as domestic violence, substance abuse, and disasters.

Preface to the Second Edition
For many of us, our sense of the world has changed in the past decade. The attacks of September 11, the continuing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and cataclysmic natural disasters have jolted us into an unwelcome awareness of our fundamental vulnerability and the fragility of all we hold dear: our health, our security, and our very lives. This reality is not new, but events have served to bring it to consciousness in a powerful and relentless fashion.
Given these tumultuous times, the need for spiritual accompaniment has never been more evident. In the Jewish community, the effort to provide it has grown in scope and sophistication. In the past few years, the field of Jewish chaplaincy has made dramatic strides in professionalization. Pastoral care is a required subject in nearly all rabbinical and cantorial training programs. I m delighted that Jewish Pastoral Care has been used as a resource in a number of seminaries. Rabbinical seminaries are increasingly encouraging, supporting, or requiring Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training for their students. A number of Jewish chaplains have been certified as CPE supervisors, and the presence of these professionals is bringing a valuable new voice to the field of pastoral education.
The membership of the National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC) has grown to more than six hundred, among whom 119 have attained certification. Perhaps even more important, the NAJC has taken its place as a partner and peer of the key national pastoral care organizations. The NAJC joined its cognate organizations in the Spiritual Care Collaborative in planning and presenting Summit 09, a landmark interdisciplinary conference, and in drafting common standards for certification, supervision, and ethics.
The Jewish healing movement continues to move and inspire individuals and communities across North America. The continued development of healing centers and healing services responds to the need for uniquely Jewish spiritual resources, and it creates a greater need for skilled professional leadership. The healing movement s inspired mining of Jewish texts for healing wisdom has added important dimensions to the work of creatively drawing from tradition in spiritual accompaniment.
The aging of the Jewish community is creating an ever more urgent demand for pastoral care and spiritual resources. Since the publication of Jewish Pastoral Care , Hiddur: The Center for Aging and Judaism of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and the Sacred Aging Project of the Union for Reform Judaism have spearheaded professional training, programming, and the creation of innovative spiritual tools. Spiritual accompaniment is an essential component of our response to the coming age wave.
As I write, the burgeoning field of spiritual care is growing in Israel. In dialogue with chaplains and Jewish communal leaders from North America, Israeli rabbis, social workers, and therapists are endeavoring to articulate and nourish forms of pastoral theology and practice that are authentic and appropriate for Israel s unique culture and challenges. This dialogue has already enriched the field of Jewish pastoral care in North America, and it will undoubtedly prompt us to deepen our thinking and practice in the future.
This expanded second edition of Jewish Pastoral Care reflects and responds to this changed landscape. Contributions from the previous edition have been updated in content and resources. In addition, this edition seeks to extend the field further by addressing themes and issues that are not reflected in existing Jewish literature and thinking.
This volume, therefore, contains several valuable new chapters from talented colleagues working in the field in a wide array of settings. Rochelle Robins brings a creative and provocative theology of pastoral care in her piece, Complexity and Imperfection: A Theology of Jewish Pastoral Care. My new chapter, Seeking the Tzelem: Making Sense of Dementia, explores the spiritual dimensions of this growing challenge. Bonita Taylor challenges us to create prayer with those we accompany in her contribution, The Power of Custom-Made Prayers. Sheldon Marder offers a rich approach to using Jewish tradition in his chapter, God Is in the Text: Using Sacred Text and Teaching in Jewish Pastoral Care. Karen Sussan offers a conceptual framework and practical guidance for accompanying individuals with mental disorders in her chapter, Loving the Stranger: Accompanying Individuals with Chronic Mental Disorders. Stephen Roberts outlines a Jewish pastoral response honed in the aftermath of September 11 in his contribution, Jewish Spiritual Care in the Wake of Disaster.
This second edition of Jewish Pastoral Care includes one more change of note. The term I coined for this work of spiritual acc
