Afterword
Introduction
Our God is an extravagant God. His Love is a no limits barred, go to any lengths kind of love. However, we humans can be more measured in our approach. Sundays are for Church and we may make specific times in our days for personal or familial prayer. To what extent God is the center of the rest of our lives will vary for each one of us. However, God didn’t make Earth a Sunday mission or a weeklong mission or a month-long mission or even a yearlong mission. No, we are God’s eternity long mission. God’s commitment to us is one of a kind. Our Creator is captivated by us and never tires of his affection for us. They are new every morning. This is why God’s love is so refreshing. God doesn’t get bored of us, however predictable we may be, or become annoyed with our eccentricities. He is constantly in love with us.
Often, when any friend or family member loves us unconditionally and consistently and adoringly, we can easily begin to take them for granted. It may even make us uncomfortable as we are regarded to a greater degree than we are able to regard ourselves. One family member who fits this bill for each one of us is our Abba Father. So, of course we take Him for granted. I mean, no matter what I do, God’s going to still love me right? So of course, I take him for granted. Just like others in my life who I take for granted, I take my Abba Father for granted. I talk a lot and don’t listen much. I forget the promises I keep to Him while thriving on His bounty. I test His boundaries all the time while He remains a perfect gentleman. I forget the appointments I’ve made with Him or arrive notoriously late while He was waiting even before time. He has to repeat things a hundred times and find innovative ways to communicate with me to get me to listen. However, He doesn’t miss a single skip of my heartbeat. So, I am sorry Daddy. I really am.
God deserves much more love and attention than any one of us with our frailties will ever be able to give Him. This devotional is designed as an attempt to love him a little extra; to go with Him the extra mile. We know the extra mile Jesus went for us. A lot of Biblical preparation times lasted 50 days. I suggest we go 100 days instead. This devotional takes you through Lent, starting the Sunday before Ash Wednesday and arrives at Easter. Easter is usually when we stop the times of fasting and prayer. We relax our flesh and our prayer life a little bit. However, this devotional takes you the next 50 days until Pentecost. You and I are going to miss many opportunities to love God in our lifetimes. How about with this devotional we change that at least a wee bit and love Him a little extra? Sit with Him a little extra, listen a little extra, Know Him a little extra and yes, let Him love us a little extra.
For those who are on the path of enquiry and discovery of the Christian faith, I hope you will spend time with this devotional and allow God to prepare your heart for what he has in store for you! A little movement towards God from our end is all he needs to unleash the full force of His being into our hearts.
While the devotional is laid out to deepen this specific season, readers are encouraged to use this as appropriate to your circumstances and the specific time in your life this book arrives in your hands.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1: 1 5 -2 3
PART 1 The First Mile
Walking with Jesus
Day 1: Authentic Spirituality
Sunday before Ash Wednesday
The journey of faith in Christ is multifaceted. As a young child I went to church every Sunday, never missed Catechism or daily family prayer. Over and above this, there were additional times set aside by my father to spend in Bible reading, mostly aloud. However, even as I became a young adult I did not actually believe. My devotion to those rituals was not a true reflection of my heart. In fact, if you asked me then, I would probably say that I believed in God, but about Christ and Christian
