Dedicated to the memory of my hero, my daddy,
Dr. Steven C. Miller
And the family, friends, and horse lovers
he left behind.

I walked alone tonight,
Alone in moonlight bright.
Alone I gazed at moon’s soft light
Stars shining with fiery light.
Trees so stately stand,
Branches and leaves at His command.
God alone is all I need,
The joy of Blessed Trinity.
Harold R. Miller, father of Old Doc Miller

Preface
If I had to pick one word to describe my father it would be love. He lived his life with love for his family, Jesus, clients, patients, and his country. Above all else, my father taught me how to love. All the days of my life, I will cherish his memory, his support, and his never ending belief in me.
It has been very difficult knowing that his love and encouragement I had known for 39 years will no longer be available to me on this earth. The vulnerability and emptiness left by his passing was and continues at times to be unbearable.
The week my father passed away, I discovered a letter in the pages of his journal addressed to me. It was dated June 3, 1989. Twenty-three years later, it now rested in my hands for the very first time. I feel compelled to share the impact his letter had on me that day. It paints a picture, portraying the depths of my father’s heart for me that my words alone cannot express.
He started out by writing, “All that is within me tells you that I love you unconditionally. I know that you don’t fully understand this yet in your life. You are being molded and tried in God’s time and plan.” He understood how to love unconditionally. You see when he wrote this letter I was 16 and I was in rebellion. I fully believed I already knew everything I ever needed to know. I was a rebel, a non-conformist and as I look back now I realize that these years required much patience on the part of my parents. I had put them through so much pain and worrying. I wish I could have seen then what I know now. He loved me just as I was even when I wasn’t easy to love. He knew I was a work in progress and I was being “molded and tried in God’s time and plan.” He knew he couldn’t make me be who God wanted me to be. So he let his prayers do the talking and he believed that God would guide me home. Oh, how I wish I could have tapped into his wisdom and not had to find out the hard way.
Later in the letter, he mentioned the feelings of discouragement I was struggling with when my performance on the baseball field hadn’t gone as planned. He reminded me it was just a game and “not to be taken so seriously; life puts hardships in front of us that are serious enough. Try to enjoy this time of your life.” He went on to explain the difference between joy and happiness. He said, “Happiness is a consequence of the circumstances of life. The episodes that we live through each day determine our state of happiness, but joy is a product of the indwelling Christ. It does not depend upon the things of life that make us happy. Joy can overcome the situations that make us unhappy. True joy comes from God himself. Even in my most unhappy times, I still have inner joy in the knowledge that God is shaping me. The abundant life that Christ gives is the joy life, the joy that gives peace in times of trouble and despair.”
He ended his letter with the sincerity I had seen play out so often in his interactions with others. He said:
My heart is heavy for you. I hurt inside when I see your rebellion against God. Remember when we let him control our lives he sets us free. This can only be understood as we let His spirit control our mind. It is so assuring to know that He is in control of our destiny. Life is short on this earth compared to eternity. God gave us Jesus Christ so that we can live with Him now and forever.
I love you son, (talk to me-we need to talk to each other)
Dad
In times of loss there are always declarations that we have lost a “great man”, but what makes a great man? There are many varying opinions, but the Bible’s definition of a great man is clear. In Luke 9:48 the Living Bible Translation states, “Your care for others is the measure of your greatness.” The great men of today are so because of their service to fellow men. My father was the epitome of a great man, not an ounce of selfishness in him. He gave all of himself to his family, his friends, his clients, and his God.
I find peace in knowing he left this Earth proud to be a messenger of God. He publicly announced the glory of God through his music. He knew the “joy life”. He left this Earth proud, happy, content, and joyful. To the greatest man I will ever know. Thank you for being my Dad. I am so proud and full of love for all that you were and continue to be in my life.
~Dr. Joshua H. Miller (aka Josha Harold), son of Old Doc Miller

A true man of God. He changed my life. Horse whisperer. Mentor. Dear friend. Family man.
These are just a few of the many wonderful compliments I have heard over this past year to describe my father. I have been told stories about him that were inspiring and life-changing. Some stories I had never heard before. Many were told by close friends and family; while others were from neighbors, members of the horse community, and acquaintances that had the pleasure of crossing paths with him.
What I have learned from my dad’s passing is that he left a legacy. He was passionate about sharing his faith by living in the truth. He used his many talents and gifts God gave him to impact his world around him. Many times it was in a barn, or in a rolling pasture, over a cup of coffee, or sitting at a football game. He once considered becoming a pastor, and even enrolled in seminary, but he soon realized his veterinary practice was his ministry and where God called him to be. His impact was astounding, and the ripple-effect from his work here on Earth is ever-flowing.
What a blessing God gave me when I was picked to be his daughter. I will admit, however, it has been difficult to find the words to describe what my father means to me. I wanted it to be perfect. I battled over selecting which fancy, awe-inspiring words to use, but it all didn’t quite fit. You see, my dad and I were very close, and our relationship was honest, comfortable, and sincere. His love for me was real, and in abundant supply.
So… what I found to be the most fitting was one simple word – home. My dad was my home. Home is the place where I feel safe and can find rest, where I can grow in my faith and seek wise counsel.
