Your divine potential can be heard speaking to you through your conscience, which lets you know when you have acted inappropriately. If you look closely at this feeling, you can sense that it is the result of repressing or acting against your divine potential.

Your divine potential is the fullest expression of your spirit. It is the discovery of the depths of your capacity to create and to express love, compassion, forgiveness, generosity, and wisdom. It is not easily apprehended by human faculties.

To fulfill your divine potential, you must get beyond reason to where you can see and understand the symbolic meaning of your experiences. Your archetypes are your guides into this realm of symbolic perspective.

The West has tended to favor a mixture of fatalism and divine order. Greek and Nordic mythology paid homage to the three fates who spin, weave, and cut the thread of life. The Western monotheistic traditions that arose in the Middle East assigned much power to the role of God in determining our destinies, while still placing a large burden on individuals to follow God’s laws.

We make choices every day that implement the terms of our Contract, keeping us on the path or getting us back on the path. We can also choose to enlist the aid of archetypes, spirit guides, and even the grace of God through prayer and meditation to attempt to fulfill our agreements more expeditiously.

Your Sacred Contract is your own unique contribution to life around you that arises from your particular set of circumstances and relationships. It is the extent to which you can decode your Contract that will depend on your willingness to accept that everything we do is for a greater purpose than we will ever know.

The author met Liza at a workshop, who went through a radical life change that was enabled by her Sacred Contract. She had been in a car accident when she was 26 that left her partially paralyzed on the right side of her body. She decided to row the boat of her life, despite her physical limitations.

After her accident, Liza made the decision to respond positively to it. She began working with physically disabled children, and she was able to help them cope with the parts of their lives that she had experienced.

After the workshop, Liza completely redefined her understanding of her life’s purpose. She wrote to me, I used to think that the purpose of my life was to do something special, like be a good gym teacher. But when that ‘something special’ was taken from me, I felt that my purpose in life was gone.

Grace is a form of vital energy that descends from the Divine and allows us to open ourselves to the healing forces of the universe. It is difficult to explain how and why we receive grace, as it is a form of energy that we can’t control.

Your charism is a unique expression of grace that empowers you to fulfill your Sacred Contract. It is a gift of proof that the Divine is intimately present in your life. It can even come into your life when you are not consciously asking for it.

The energy that Cindy felt surging through her during her epiphany in the bookstore is her charism, which she now recognizes as God’s voice within her. Your own search for your purpose in life makes you a candidate for an infusion of grace.

Acknowledging your divine grace and guidance is the first step to making life more rewarding. When you see life symbolically, you see the larger and deeper meaning in any event. This view allows you to rise above whatever is happening and see it in the context of your entire life.

You may have noticed certain recurring patterns of problems or events in your life. You may have trouble with your parents, or troubled relationships with other men or women. You may have repeated illnesses or difficulties in your career.

Dreams are a symbolic pathway to our hidden fears and desires. They reveal to us the language in which our psyche speaks. The key to some dreams lies in a simple understanding of the meaning of a central image.

When you do not seek or need external approval, you are at your most powerful. When you are true to yourself, you can’t be manipulated. I learned this lesson in my job as a secretary, and it made me appreciate why the famous line to thine own self be true in Shakespeare’s Hamlet is considered a spiritual commandment.

I had become a professional medical intuitive, teacher, and author. In 1995, when I started work on Anatomy of the Spirit, I had another airplane dream that measured the progress I was making toward completing my flight plan and getting a book off the ground.

I had many airplane dreams, and in each one, I was boarding a plane and sitting in an empty seat way in the back. Finally, I was allowed to board the plane, and I was given a seat. I was extremely eager for the manuscript to be published, but I realized that I could not hide from anyone.

I was scheduled to teach a ten-day workshop in Ireland the day that my brother died, and I flew to Shannon Airport. I was at the grand turning point in my life, as I was separated from close friends, family, and business associates.

The dreams were a reminder that I was on the right path. They reassured me that I was flying the right path, and that I still needed direction. They also said that I was being supported, and that the universe would not let me get too far ahead of myself or fail to get where I was supposed to go.

Changing your life for the better and helping others is part of the reason you are on earth. Knowing your Sacred Contract allows you to see how seemingly random events and encounters are actually part of a life script that provides you with countless opportunities for spiritual transformation.

Sharon’s work with the homeless led her to a series of interviews with people who gave of their time and resources without expecting anything in return. She began to see her job as a spiritual mission, reporting on how people relate to each other’s spirit and their own power to create change.

We all have Contracts with many people in our lives. These are the people we are not simply destined to meet, but are required to meet. And no matter how many opportunities to meet with them escape you, if you have a Contract you will meet up eventually.

The relationships in your life, such as your family, friends, and lovers, are all part of your agreements to learn certain lessons on earth. But some relationships that seem to be brief or casual cannot be ignored.

The animation factor refers to the electricity that occurs between two people when the energy of life kicks in. The absence of electricity between people is as obvious as its presence. Without electricity, nothing will bridge the gap between you and another person.
Insights from Chapter 2

Your Contract is not an end in itself. It is a means to an end, a plan to help you develop your divine potential. Think of your Sacred Contract as a life course in which you are meant to learn many lessons.

Your Sacred Contract is an agreement your soul makes before you are born. You promise to do certain things for yourself, others, and divine purposes. You must discover what you are meant to do. The Divine promises to give you the guidance you need through your intuition, dreams, hunches, coincidences, and other indicators.

God had made other covenants with Noah and Abraham, promising to protect their offspring and help them prosper if they met certain terms. The scriptures used the word covenant for the first time, which originally meant a legally binding agreement between two or more parties.

In a business contract, work is exchanged for financial support, and sometimes other benefits. In a Sacred Contract, your payment is in spiritual capital – in insight, purpose, self-understanding, and the attainment of spiritual attributes such as compassion, selflessness, and faith.

A Sacred Contract also includes the element of choice. You are free to decide how to follow through with the terms of a contract, as long as those terms are met by the agreed-upo
