Sample Book Insights:
#1 The Psalms are a great source of solace and encouragement for God’s people. They are revelations of truth, but they are presented in the terms of human experience. They are honest with themselves, and that is why they are so valuable.
#2 We must deal with the Biblical teaching on this subject, and then we can go on to look at certain notable examples from the Bible and observe how the persons concerned behaved. We must not only extract the principles illustrated by the stories, but also the teachings.
#3 We must face this problem for the sake of the Kingdom of God and the glory of God. We must represent God and His message and power in such a way that people are drawn and attracted to us, even if we are depressed.
#4 The causes of spiritual blindness are many, and they are all related to the fact that we do not take the time to examine ourselves. We must take time to examine ourselves, because general statements are not enough in and of themselves.

#1

The Psalms are a great source of solace and encouragement for God’s people. They are revelations of truth, but they are presented in the terms of human experience. They are honest with themselves, and that is why they are so valuable.

#2

We must deal with the Biblical teaching on this subject, and then we can go on to look at certain notable examples from the Bible and observe how the persons concerned behaved. We must not only extract the principles illustrated by the stories, but also the teachings.

#3

We must face this problem for the sake of the Kingdom of God and the glory of God. We must represent God and His message and power in such a way that people are drawn and attracted to us, even if we are depressed.

#4

The causes of spiritual blindness are many, and they are all related to the fact that we do not take the time to examine ourselves. We must take time to examine ourselves, because general statements are not enough in and of themselves.

#5

The condition of depression is a picture of spiritual dejection. It is an accurate depiction of how people look when they are depressed. When we are in a right relationship with God, we will always show it in our face.

#6

When we are suffering from depression, we often do not realize the impression that we are making on others. If we only had the power to see ourselves as others see us, we would realize how much our condition is affecting our appearance and behavior.

#7

There are many different types of people, and the problems and difficulties we face are largely determined by our temperament and make-up. We must understand that all Christians are not alike, and that they are not meant to be.

#8

The first fundamental law of dietetics is that Jack Spratt could not eat any fat, his wife could not eat any lean. It is a vital, fundamental principle for dietetics that we all differ in our make-up, and it is unreasonable to lay down universal legislation as though men were machines.

#9

There is a type of person who is particularly prone to spiritual depression. They are not any worse than others, but they are particularly prone to introspection, which can lead to morbidity and introspection.

#10

The second big cause of spiritual depression is physical conditions. It is difficult to draw the line between this and the previous cause because temperament is controlled by physical conditions. There are certain people who are constitutionally prone to spiritual depression.

#11

The final and ultimate cause of all spiritual depression is unbelief. If it were not for unbelief, the devil could do nothing. It is because we listen to the devil instead of listening to God that we go down before him and fall before his attacks.

#12

The main art in the matter of spiritual living is to know how to handle yourself. You must take yourself in hand, address yourself, question yourself, and say to your soul: Why art thou cast down. Then you must go on to remind yourself of God, Who God is, and what God has done.

#13

The treatment of this self of ours, this other man within us, is to understand that he must be handled. Do not listen to him, turn on him, speak to him, condemn him, and exhort him.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The Psalmist instructs us to face ourselves and examine ourselves, and if we are among those who never seem to know the joy of salvation and the joy of the Lord, we must discover the cause. The causes of spiritual depression are many, and it is important to address them one by one and take them in detail.

#2

The particular problem with which we are dealing is common among those who have been raised in a religious manner rather than those who have not. It is more likely to affect those who have been raised in Christian families and communities and who have always been taken to a place of worship than those who have not.

#3

John Wesley was a classic example of someone who was not a Christian until 1738, when he understood the way of salvation through justification by faith only.

#4

We must be clear about our justification before we can be righteous. We must understand that there are certain things about which we must be perfectly clear before we can hope to have peace and enjoy the Christian life.

#5

The first four chapters of the Epistle to the Romans are devoted to the teaching that God rewards those who are righteous by faith in Christ. You must be made miserable before you can experience true Christian joy.

#6

The main reason people go astray is because they do not truly understand their sin. They think of sin only in terms of actions, and they do not consider the fact that they have never committed certain actions because they have never been tempted to do so.

#7

The first thing we must do to avoid a conviction of sin is to stop focusing on particular sins. We all have prejudices about what constitutes sin, and because we aren’t guilty of those things, we think we aren’t sinners. But that isn’t the way to know you are guilty of sin.

#8

The Law of God is the test for whether you are a sinner or not. It is the first commandment: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. If you are not loving God with all your being, you are a sinner.

#9

The first step to having a true experience of salvation is to have a conviction of sin. If you do not realize that you are unworthy before God, and that you are utterly condemned, you will never find joy.

#10

The second principle is that God’s way of salvation in Christ is the great good news. It means that God has made Jesus responsible for our sins, and because He has punished them on the Cross, He can forgive us.

#11

The Christian way of salvation is through justification by faith. It is all in Christ, and God puts his righteousness upon us. We must not rest on the fact that we have the oracles of God and are God’s people.
