Mouse the Courageous
Mouse wants to say “Rain, rain go away” so he can go out and play, but he also knows the rain is necessary to make things new. Quietly, he moves away from his front door and goes to his library nook. Unlike most mice who use paper and books for nesting, Mouse likes to learn, and he tucks himself up in his chair and allows his imagination to wander.
In his lap are books on great sailing ships. Maybe it is because of the rain outside beating against his tiny home, but immediately he sees and feels the spray of the ocean hitting the bow of his boat.
Standing by the helm, this daring mouse presses his hand against his forehead. Scanning the horizon looking for a safe haven for his crew; Mouse stares past the dark clouds pressing against the afternoon sky. Lightning flashes in the distance. Mouse knows a storm is not a sailor’s friend on the open sea.
The waves become rough, and the men begin to scurry on the deck. They look more like mice than their leader does at the moment. “Sir!” and the captain looks up at the man who is speaking to him.
“What is it?” asks the seemingly fearless leader.
“Sir look what’s a brewin’,” he says pointing toward the windstorm.
Mouse responds, “I know.”
His first mate continues, “None of the men have spotted land. What are your orders?”
Scratching his furry face, the mouse can see fear behind the man’s eyes. Fear is not good. His men need to keep calm. Quickly his mind gives him the answer. “The wind is blowing hard from our backs. We’ll use it to our advantage. Tell the men to release the sails.”
“Aye sir!”
As the order is given the intrepid mouse tells the helmsman, “Let the winds drive us!”
“Aye Sir!”
In the distance, the squall grows stronger, and the crew braces themselves. Powerful winds blow the ship forward with great speed. This new direction gives the men hope because they can see land. This is the good news. The bad news is the blustery storm is propelling the ship onward toward a barrier reef. Reefs can rip up the strong ship, and all can be lost including the men. With all of his might, he shouts to the first mate, “Stand fast! Every man to his station!”
“Aye Sir!”
“Helmsman! Avoid those rocks! Turn hard man! Turn hard away! Bosun, tell the men to batten the sails! They’ll drive us into the reef!” Every man on the boat flies to his task.
Wildly, the ocean rushes waves over the decks. Men and Mouse are very tired and are getting soaked to the skin. Still they need to stay alert if they want to make it to safety. Without the sails, the hurricane quickly overtakes them, but the rudder of the great boat is keeping them out of the rocks for the moment.
“Sir, what more can we do?” asks the weary first mate.
“Pray! Tell the men to pray! Only God can deliver us from this monster that bears down upon us!”
With one voice the men and Mouse cry out to the Living God, “Have mercy on us! Save us! Save us!”

All the sudden, Mouse’s keen eye sees a ray of sunlight. It is shining brightly in the midst of the storm. “Go toward the Light!” Two men are at the helm fighting the wind and waves as they try to pursue the new course. The light stays constant even though the rest of the world seems dark and strange.
Time seems to creep by, but the sunlight shines brighter and brighter as those in the boat get closer to their target. Nestled on the other side of the island is a lagoon, a harbor from the gale.
Once inside the passageway, they lower the anchor and wait for the tempest to pass. Now the men and Mouse can let the storm rage about them, and they are not afraid. Captain Mouse yells above the din, “Offer up thanks to God for His goodness!” And every man does as he is told.
The mouse stands with his hands at his hips and a smile on his face. They have overcome great odds by the grace of God.
Unexpectedly, the mouse hears a very loud knock at his door bringing him back from his voyage and into reality. It is his friend the rabbit. “Hello! Are you going to stay inside all day?” he asks. “The sun has come out.”
Mouse replies, “Oh! That’s good. I’ll be right there.”
Rabbit shakes his head, “Been reading books again?”
“Yes and let me tell you all about my adventure.” the mouse says with a twinkle in his eye.
But his wise friend says, “Let’s make our own adventure and save your story for another time.”
Mouse cannot help but agree, and they spend the rest of the day on their own quest.

Mouse the Brave
It is mid spring. Mouse and Rabbit lead a troop of young boys across the wild meadow. Alone in the tall grass stands their destination, the Knotted Tree. Clearing his throat, Mouse tries to gain their attention, but they are too busy to notice. So instead, he raises his voice loudly like a boom. “Boys, listen up!” Immediately the group becomes quiet and with large eyes, they listen closely to their instructor.
Pacing before them Mouse tells them, “Today we embark on a dangerous adventure.” Wanting to make sure all their eyes follow his every move; Mouse quickly turns causing the little boys to jump back a little bit. Waiting for them to come to a standstill, Mouse asks, “Who is the oldest?”
Without showing fear, one of them raises his hand and says, “I am sir.”
“Good, then you’ll bring up the rear. You’ll be the last of the group with Beaver directly behind you. It will be your job to make sure none of the younger ones lag behind.”
“Yes sir!” replies the intrepid youth.
“Rabbit will give you further instruction. Rabbit if you please.”
Addressing the young boys, Rabbit instructs, “When we are out on the trail, you have to be quiet. Pay attention to your surroundings, look, listen, and sniff the air. But most importantly, watch my tail.” Rabbit turns and wiggles his tail back and forth. “If you see me do this it means to move forward.” Pointing his tail downward, “This means stop.” Crouching down with his ears back and his tail pointing straight up, “This means danger and you’re to hide. Understood?”
A resounding “Yes sir!” fills the air.
“And one more thing, you must walk in a single file. We will try not to leave a trail. Beaver will smooth out any of the crushed grass we may leave behind.”
Off they go, and the day is filled with all kinds of finds. Sights and sounds meet them around every rock. On part of their journey, they follow an army of ants. Then after lunch, some of the little ones want to take a nap, but today they have to move sleepily along the trail.
Suddenly, Mouse and Rabbit crouch down low to the ground. Rabbit’s tail goes straight up and without saying a word, all of them scurry to hide. High above them, a hawk circles looking for his next meal. He had noticed on his first fly by the potential to feast well today. But alas, as he circled again, they were nowhere to be found, so the hawk moves on. Once the hawk is out of sight, they come out of their hiding places. This time everyone is wide awake, and Beaver does his best not to let his tail nervously beat the ground.
The afternoon strolls by and Mouse climbs a boulder. Motioning for everyone to join him, Mouse says, “All right boys, do you see that tree?”
“Yes sir!” they replied.
“Good, that tree is where we’ll spend the night tonight before returning home tomorrow.”
Climbing down from their perch, they continue through the tall grass. Suddenly, out of nowhere something moves swiftly and grabs up a couple of the boys. “Help! Help!”
Mouse shouts at Rabbit and Beaver, “Get the rest to the rock! Go now! Tell them to pray!” Mouse runs as fast as he can to find them. He moves into an open area, and he sees them. A snake has the children in his coils, and he wants to eat them, but Mouse is not about to let that happen.
“Lord! Show me what to do! Help me please!” Mouse’s quick eye spots a sharp stick lying nearby. Like a flash he grabs it and races toward the snake as he waves and shouts. The snake is not easily swayed, and he keeps one eye on the mouse and the other on his captives.
“You mean, foul, serpent! Put those children down and fight me!” demands Mouse.
The slithering snake replies with a cruel laugh, “Gladly, I can’t lose.” Except he doesn’t put the children down; the forked tongue reptile isn’t about to let them get away. Easily the snake moves the boys further down into his coils.
Mouse lunges only to be pushed back by the advance of the enemy. Effortlessly, the wily snake dodges Mouse’s sharp weapon. With each parry, it seems as if Mouse is no match for his adversary. Rabbit and Beaver get the rest of the troop to safety. They begin praying, asking their gracious God for help.

Tripping over a small pebble, Mouse loses his balance and falls backward onto the ground. His foe rears back his hea
