Description

Keith Warrington explores the textual mentions of the Holy Spirit

Despite the teaching of the Bible and church tradition, it seems that many Christians can still lack an appreciation of God the Holy Spirit. He has sometimes been valued more for the gifts he bestows than for who he is; or he has been viewed simply as the 'third person of the Godhead'.

However, Keith Warrington's conviction is that the Holy Spirit is more important, more central, more immanently involved in his creation, the church, and individual believers, more often and more strategically, than many Christians realise.

When Jesus left his disciples and went to heaven, he gave the best gift he could - the Holy Spirit - knowing that he will be our dynamic guide and partner as we seek to live as God's people. In this practical, biblically based exploration of the Spirit, Warrington encourages believers to recognize that the same Spirit seeks to encounter us and desires that we encounter him.

GENERAL PREFACE
T HE B IBLE S PEAKS T ODAY describes three series of expositions, based on the books of the Old and New Testaments, and on Bible themes that run through the whole of Scripture. Each series is characterized by a threefold ideal:

to expound the biblical text with accuracy
to relate it to contemporary life, and
to be readable.
These books are, therefore, not commentaries , for the commentary seeks rather to elucidate the text than to apply it, and tends to be a work rather of reference than of literature. Nor, on the other hand, do they contain the kinds of sermons that attempt to be contemporary and readable without taking Scripture seriously enough. The contributors to The Bible Speaks Today series are all united in their convictions that God still speaks through what he has spoken, and that nothing is more necessary for the life, health and growth of Christians than that they should hear what the Spirit is saying to them through his ancient - yet ever modern - Word.

Author s preface
The omniscient Spirit is available to guide believers as they gaze at God. He beckons them to come ever closer to him. He encourages them to take pleasure in the benefits of the remarkable salvation provided by Jesus. He is the one who takes the inexplicable gift of eternal life and makes it theirs to enjoy. Without him, we would have little. With him, we have more than we need. He is the smiling face of God to us who chooses to live in the centre of our lives. He blesses us with his presence and graces us with his gifts.
I hope that this book will be an enjoyable and rewarding journey in partnership with the Bible and the Spirit. It is my prayer that you will be more closely drawn to him as the Spirit s closeness to you becomes more apparent as he is explored through these pages. I dedicate it to all those who are on a journey with the Spirit and who wish to relate to him at deeper levels of experience. May your encounters with the Spirit be a constant cause for wonder and worship.
I am grateful to all who have helped me in my adventure with the Spirit. To my undergraduate and postgraduate students at Regents Theological College, England, including my students who have, with reference to the Spirit, begun to tread where few others have gone before. In all our studies together, as we have gazed at the Spirit, we have found fresh delights. I am also grateful to my Research Assistant, Dr Timothy Walsh, Dr Philip Duce (Theological Books Editor, IVP) and Dr Derek Tidball (BST Themes Series Editor) who have checked for errors and improved my style. My wife, Judy, who is my constant friend and guide, is a gift of the Spirit to me and an integral support to my mission in life. Even though she has a busy life of her own, she has read the text and contributed to the discussion throughout. Finally, I am grateful most of all to the Spirit who has allowed us with our fragile minds to explore him and has been prepared to help us as we do. We will continue the quest in eternity but I am grateful for the opportunity to commence it now.

Introduction
The Holy Spirit has, to a large degree, received limited comment in comparison to the published material exploring the Father and Jesus. This can be attributed to a number of reasons. There is not a great deal of specific information concerning the Spirit in the OT where the Spirit and God are often viewed synonymously (Job 27:3; Ps. 33:6; 104:29-30). Furthermore, it is sometimes difficult to determine if the Hebrew word r a refers to the Spirit or the wind, for it can be translated as both. The fact that when the Spirit is mentioned in the OT it is in connection with his influencing only a small number of people also undermines his significance in the minds of many believers today. As a result, they have not realised his full potential for them.
This restriction in the OT is emphasized, in that the Spirit mainly inspires important leaders (including judges and kings) or those with special tasks rather than ordinary folk. It is generally men who are chosen and empowered by him. Likewise, only the covenant people of God are antic
