Description

If Malawi calls itself a God-fearing nation, then Mzuzu should be a God-fearing city. This survey of religious geography describes major aspects of the religious reality in Mzuzu. Quantitative methods were used in order to create a full picture of the distribution of religious centres as in 2013.

Extrait

Zeenah Sibande is an ordained minister of Word and Sacraments in the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia. Currently he is a chaplain and lecturer at Ekwendeni College of Health Sciences and part-îme lecturer in the field of research at University of Livingstonia, Ekwendeni Campus. He previously served as Parish Minister at Lupaso and Mchengautuwa CCAP Congregaîons in Mzuzu. Further, he served as Presbytery Clerk of Mzuzu Presbytery in the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia. He obtained his BD from Zomba Theological College, his MA from Mzuzu University and is currently studying for PhD, also with Mzuzu University.
If Malawi calls itself a God-fearing naîon, then Mzuzu should be a God-fearing city. Zeenah Sibande, in doing his research in religious geography, could, of course, not find out if that is true, but he found Mzuzu definitely to be a religious city. He idenîfied 203 centres of public worship, one for less than 700 inhabitants. Most of the centres of worship are Chrisîan, and he describes the great variety within that religion (as much as the lesser variety in Islam). Both numbers and variety are growing by the day. This is the first major study of religious geography in Malawi, and it calls for more invesîgaîon on the local, regional and naîonal level, as religion played a major role in determining the borders of Malawi, and maybe even its existence today as a naîon state.
