Description

The current daily experiences of undocumented students as they navigate the processes of entering and then thriving in Jesuit colleges are explored alongside an investigation of the knowledge and attitudes among staff and faculty about undocumented students in their midst, and the institutional response to their presence. Cutting across the fields of U.S. immigration policy, theory and history, religion, law, and education, Undocumented and in College delineates the historical and present-day contexts of immigration, including the role of religious institutions. This unique volume, based on an extensive two-year study (2010-12) of undocumented students at Jesuit colleges in the United States and with contributions from various scholars working within these institutions, incorporates survey research and in-depth interviews to present the perspectives of students, staff, and the institutions.

Thîs book îs the resut o a our-year study o the experîences o coeges and coege students în the Unîted States who are traversîng hîgher educatîon whîe undocumented. The chapters în the book expore how the sîtuatîon o such îmmîgrants has changed over tîme and what the cur-rent ega chaenges and opportunîtîes are or thîs growîng popuatîon o students. A descrîptîon o thîs Ford Foundatîon–unded study can be ound în the Introductîon. Whîe many o the chapter authors worked on the orîgîna study, addîtîona schoars have been încuded to hep to add context and to update our findîngs wîth current coege practîces. As co-edîtors o thîs book, we were both part o the socîa scîence research team that întervîewed staf, acuty, and students and anayzed the varîous types o data coected to gaîn an understandîng o how înstî-tutîons have responded and adapted to havîng undocumented students on theîr campuses. The research took pace, as îs the case now, at a tîme wîth hîgh mîgratîon rates around the word and when îmmîgratîon poîtîcs and poîcy are extremey contested îssues that brîng out strong, oten hostîe emotîona reactîons, very dîvergent poîcy vîews and proposas, and the potentîa or human rîghts abuses. The study provîdes the oppor-tunîty to aso ook at the roe o another înstîtutîona actor în the debates: reîgîous organîzatîons, namey, the responses o the twenty-eîght coeges în the U.S. Cathoîc Jesuît hîgher educatîon network. Thîs context pro-vîdes another ayer o anaysîs: the roe o these mîssîon-drîven înstîtu-tîons în respondîng and reactîng to thîs contested îssue. Studyîng thîs partîcuar system o schoos îs extremey useu or a study such as thîs becausetheearîestschoosînthenetworkwereoundedtoprovîdeschooîng to the new îmmîgrants o that tîme, namey, Cathoîc Itaîan and Irîsh first generatîon îmmîgrants. The strategîc research desîgn o the study aowed or the opportunîty to understand a twenty-eîght schoos, and to use a case study approach
viiieface pr
to expore specîfic practîces and experîences at sîx o those înstîtutîons on the West Coast, în the Mîdwest, and on the East Coast. Whîe some areas o the Unîted States tend to attract îmmîgrants rom partîcuar parts o the word, we ound that the chaenges or students and înstîtutîona responses were sîmîar across the Unîted States. The authors are a acuty and staf who currenty work or have worked at these înstîtutîons. As such we have had persona experîences înteract-îng wîth and earnîng rom these extremey hîgh-achîevîng students as they attempt to manage the compîcated reaîtîes o beîng undocumented whîe consîderîng the Unîted States the ony home that they have truy known. As acuty members on the East Coast (Terry-Ann) and West Coast (Laura), we have seen students who have exceed în hîgh schoo, earned competîtîve schoarshîps to attend our expensîve înstîtutîons, strugged to fit în and aford coege and support theîr amîîes, exceed în theîr majors, and then graduated to uncertaîn utures, workîng at jobs that severey under-utîîze theîr skîs and abîîtîes. We aso have seen our înstîtutîons strugge to ufi theîr mîssîons to provîde an equa educatîona experî-ence or a students, whîe îmîted by edera poîcîes and arger socîeta attîtudes about îmmîgratîon and îmmîgrants. Whîe the study and our experîences aow us to see, cose up, how înstîtutîons and students dea wîth the îssues reated to beîng undocu-mented on a day-to-day basîs, thîs book puts these experîences în a arger context. It provîdes the opportunîty to consîder how îmmîgratîon poîcy has afected undocumented students over tîme and how coeges as înstî-tutîona agents have responded aong wîth and sometîmes în opposîtîon to these arger socîeta orces. As such, the experîences o students and înstîtutîons chronîced în these chapters can be extremey înstructîve în înormîng uture poîcy înîtîatîves that must eventuay grappe wîth the reaîty o havîng so many peope wîthout authorîzatîon workîng în our ow-payîng economy and attendîng our pubîc schoos. Whîe there are no easy fixes, thîs study îs urther evîdence o the opportunîty and poten-tîa o findîng a compassîonate way orward that can aso be cost-efectîve gîven the natîona resources aready învested în young îmmîgrants who are strîvîng to reaîze an Amerîcan Dream that appears to be more and more eusîve.
