Anjana Gets a Curse
Once upon a time, there lived a female monkey named Anjana. She was actually a beautiful fairy from the celestial world. She was born as a female monkey due to a curse.
One day, Anjana, the beautiful fairy, was playing as a child on earth. She saw a sage meditating with his legs folded in a funny pose, like a monkey.
“Ha Ha Ha! What a funny sight it is!” Anjana laughed.
She threw some fruits at the sage to disturb him. But the poor fairy didn’t know that the sage was no ordinary sage. He was a very powerful sage. He was in the monkey posture to complete his Tapasya (penance). The fruits thrown by Anjana disturbed his penance. He opened his eyes in great annoyance.
“Who are you? And why did you disturb me?” shouted the sage.
Anjana laughed aloud. The sage got furious. He cursed the fairy.
“You will become a monkey in your next birth,” cursed the sage.
Hearing the curse, Anjana was terrified. She was in tears.
“O holy sage! Please forgive me. I am a fairy. Please don’t take away the beauty from me. I’ll die,” Anjana cried inconsolably.
The sage felt sorry for the fairy.
“Listen, you have got the punishment for your foolishness. Unfortunately, it is not possible for me to reverse the curse. But if you go to earth and live there for sometime as a monkey and give birth to an incarnation of Lord Shiva, the curse will be removed. You will be a beautiful fairy again,” said the sage.
Soon, Anjana was born on earth as a female monkey. She lived in a forest. One day, she met a strong and good looking monkey. His name was Kesari. He was the king of monkeys with magical powers. She fell in love with him.
Kesari and Anjana got married and lived in their palace happily.
Hanuman is Born
After many years of marriage. Anjana and Kesari did not have a child. Anjana was a pious devotee of Lord Shiva. She along with King Kesari performed intense tapasya, worshipping Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva was pleased with her.
