I n this book, we’re going to talk all about the most dangerous deserts in the world. So, let’s get right to it!
A bout one fifth of the landmass worldwide is composed of dry, barren deserts, which get very little precipitation, about 10 inches or less annually. Deserts are some of the most dangerous places to be on Earth. Deserts are characterized by their lack of water and this is certainly one of the aspects that make them dangerous to people.
E xtreme temperatures, both hot and cold, are another reason that deserts are dangerous. Sudden dust storms in hot deserts and severe freezing winds in polar deserts are also a threat.
A nimals that live in deserts, such as scorpions and snakes that can kill with their deadly venoms, large mammal carnivorous predators such as polar bears in the Arctic regions, and leopards in Africa, pose deadly risks for those traveling through the desert as well.
THE SAHARA DESERT—Africa
T he Sahara Desert is the largest expanse of dry, hot land on Earth. It encompasses about 9.4 million square kilometers, which is more landmass than the United States and is the largest desert that isn’t a polar desert. The word Sahara means “The Great Desert” in the Arabic language and it is certainly true to that name since it covers most of North Africa and extends through more than ten different countries.
