Description

This book is about people with disabilities (PWDs) and the extraordinary talents they have that can contribute towards the world economy generally and that of Southern and Central Africa in particular. The papers selected for this book were presented at an international conference that was held at the University of Botswana from 16th to 19th October 2018. The conference was held in order to address the injustices, discrimination and exclusion that people with disabilities face in their daily life. The papers discuss the need to train families and leaders in disability awareness, for clear national policies, the funding needed to address issues that affect PWDs, inclusive education, and the need to create a conducive environment and the implementation of policies, strategies and programmes. The book also points to the importance of sharing stories and experiences of success as a strategy of empowering PDWs.

Imagine the world of science without Stephen Hawking, who, in spite of being
wheel-chaired and dependent on a computerized voice systematized
communication, was a highly accomplished scientist; the Olympics without
Thanni Grey Thompson, who was a legendary Paralympic athlete; television
without Stephen Fry, who suered from bipolar disorder causing manic
depression and mental disorder and Tiger Woods, the American professional
golfer, who had stuttering problems at childhood but had to ght and conquer
his speech disorder through hard work and practice. His achievement today
ranks him among the most successful golfers in the world.
This book argues that people with disabilities (PWDs) have extraordinary A QUEST FOR INCLUSION & PARTICIPATION
talents to succeed and contribute to the world economy. Many PWDs have OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY IN SOCIETY
strong character and determination to live life in its fullness. Though not every
one of the PWDs is a genius, they have the potential, in their own way, to be
extraordinary and that with the right support, they can make valuable
contributions to society and live a fullling life. I, therefore, recommend this
book to policy makers, religious leaders, educationists, politicians, traditional
leaders, prospective employers and PWDs.
