Growing Population, Growing Pollution
By - Pankaj K. Singh
Dedicated to India’s new generation, Who has to learn to love the environment. And on whose efforts the future of the country depends upon.
Preface
The health framework of the country is stumbling due to growing population and increasing pollution. And moreover Asian and African countries have become research laboratories for the developed nations. International and multi-national pharmaceutical companies make these undeveloped and poor countries the targets of their experiments and infectious diseases in a well-organized manner. Many countries like India and other African countries lose a lot of time, money, energy and resources by getting embroiled in the net of epidemics. This becomes a barrier in the economic progress of the country.
We need to understand that the power of a country can be determined by looking at the standard of health of its citizens. The country whose citizens are not healthy and capable can never be on the fast track to development. Global experience tells us that countries whose citizens are healthy and efficient are the ones that are able to make progress and become rich and powerful. In other words we can say that if we analyse the progress of powerful countries in any era, we can make an accurate analysis by looking at the list of winners of the Olympic games. For example; the best performance with regard to the medals tally at the Olympic games, starting from the beginning of the 20th century, has been displayed by America, Russia, Britain, Germany, China, France, Japan and Australia. These are the countries which are on the top in terms of power and prosperity.
It is clear that healthy and educated citizens can make a country proud in world sports competitions. In India, such a state of fitness cannot be developed even today. India is facing a lot of challenges at the level of citizens’ health today. Because of the increasing population, three-fourths of India’s population is a victim to malnutrition. Because of pollution and garbage no place seems worth living in if seen in the perspective of its environment. Forest wealth, forest area, plants-all are depleting, and vehicles and people are increasing in an unregulated manner. In order to fulfill the food requirements of the increasing population we have polluted our land with dangerous chemicals, fertilizers, polluted water and plastic. Plastic waste that takes thousands of years to degenerate and e-waste are the two biggest causes of pollution. This is putting a question mark of the possibilities of the future generation’s survival. Today, there is always smog and dust in the atmosphere-whether it is summer, winter or any other season.
The problem of pollution is not limited to India, but India bears the brunt of pollution because of its extreme climate and huge population. We know that a huge climate change is taking place because of Global warming. The polar icecaps are melting very fast. The water levels of the oceans are rising very fast. If this situation remains the same for some more time, the entire world will have to face destructive natural calamities. Man’s egoistic claims of development will be swept away in the flood of these natural calamities. According to an international research, there will be economic losses to the tune of about 14 lakh crores by the year 2100. If we do not attain the objective of the Paris Climate Agreement, there will be an increase of two degrees in the global average temperature and the mean level of the oceans will rise by about 0.86 meters. And the worst affected countries will be those that are poor and undeveloped, like India. Today, about 60 crore people live in areas that are less than 10 meters above sea level. When the temperature rises due to Global warming, the ice sheets and glaciers will melt and the sea levels rise, these people will have to vacate their houses and homes and shift to safer places. In countries like India and China that have median incomes, the incidents of oceanic floods will be the most. Countries that are situated along the coasts will be economically and socially destroyed. For the time being, the rich nations will be safe because of their awareness and strength, because safety and security measures are strong there and the populations are controlled and limited.
Today, the maximum plastic garbage is being recovered from the rivers of Asia and Africa. According to an International report, the first two rivers in terms of pollution are the Yangtze of China and Sindhu river of India. The worrying aspect is that the sacred Ganga about whose clearing and existence the entire country is worried, is also sixth on this list. Amongst the most polluted rivers in the world are the Yellow river, Hwang-Ho, Amur, Pearl and Mekong of Asia, and Nile and Niger of Africa. Till now, about nine trillion metric tons of plastic has been generated in the world. Out of this about six and a half metric tons of plastic has been converted into garbage. And of the rest about five lakh tons of plastic is lying around the oceans in the form of shredded plastic. Every year about 80 lakh tons of plastic is dumped in the oceans. Plastic of both types- small micro plastic and big-sized plastic material is present in this. We have to identify the polluted rivers and stop plastic pollution at the point where water enters the rivers and oceans. There is only one effective solution to this and that is to put a ban on plastics. Human carelessness and irresponsible behavior is the reason that our rivers and oceans are getting polluted with surface plastic. This plastic can become the cause for the destruction of the human race in the future.
In order to save the environment, all of us will need to be aware. It is a question of the existence of human civilization. In this context, we should be ready to do everything that is required. Scientific, economic and technical progress are man’s achievements, but we also need to see that these are not vital for man’s body and health. For human civilization to survive, we need a clean environment, air, better climate and forest wealth. We have survived without technology and its products for lakhs of years, but we cannot survive for a single moment without clean water, air, forests and plants. If we make economic and scientific progress at the cost of human health, it will not be sensible at all. It is surprising that despite being the most intelligent life form on this earth, human is carrying out such dangerous and destructive acts that have created situations that are posing a danger for his very survival. There cannot be a more serious issue than the conservation of the environment and human health. Each and every citizen of India needs to ponder on this issue at depth. Creative thinking is the basis of the best behaviour. This book is an attempt in this direction. It is hoped that this book will prove useful for all citizens, especially students, researchers, students appearing for competitive examinations and policy makers.

Uncontrolled Population, Diseased Country
Today, India seems to be in the vice-like grip of a host of diseases. The increasing population is putting a huge pressure on development and health of the country. The pace of the country’s development is not slow, but the uncontrolled population growth does not let the problems come to an end. This reason is at the core of most of India’s problems. It is affecting the mental and physical health of the people and the quality of life is going down each day. It is due to the population explosion that the country is bogged down with poverty, unemployment, anarchy, indiscipline, violence, crimes and anti-national activities. The rising population is creating a resource shortage and the biggest danger is being faced by the environment and food resources. The rising population does not let the government and the society focus on environment, cleanliness, education and development and is limited to somehow making the ends meet and providing nourishment for the physical body.
The new generation is unable to get proper education and resolutions, nor a healthy environment and proper diet. In the absence of a proper education, guidance and inspirational environment children are being misled from their childhood itself. One can see children, at the very young age, are getting into the habit of drugs, consumption of tobacco, liquor, and other intoxicants. These bad habits have become a part of their lives. This is causing a lot of health issues and loss of lives and money. Despite several efforts of the government, one cannot see much change and consciousness in the society.
The increasing use of drugs is not restricted to India, but is a global phenomenon. Underdeveloped and over populated countries like India are not being able to take proper advantage of development because of over-population. According to experts and doctors, the regular use of tobacco or smoking can cause 12 types of cancer and 21 life threatening diseases. In America alone, about 5 lakh people die due to these diseases. After research that continued for a decade it came to be known that scientists have found five new diseases that are
