Description

‘Societal codependency’, a book being published at this time, describes a previously underacknowledged entity as it relates not only to world history, but also to its  contribution to the current world order.  Societal codependency describes a characteristic relatedness we have with one another personally as well as with others within the world societal framework.  It is this relatedness which lays the foundation for many of the world society’s issues today.  Societal codependency represents a way of being in all of us which is subconsciously motivated.  The subconscious motivation has us act in ways which have profound effects on our personal as well as on our societal well-being.  In other words, aspects of personal and societal interactions are being dictated by thought processes which are not readily within our realm of perception.  Our learned societal codependent way of being has had significant effect and manufacturing many of our most profound societal ills as well as many of our most tenuous of local, national and global issues.

Another fascinating aspect of societal codependency is its propagation through each of us individually.  Whereas we justify global issues as being sourced exclusively from a remote factor, each and every one of us contributes to these issues with our own way of being.  Most of us picture ourselves as being small and insignificant in regards to our personal contribution to a prevailing world order.  In fact, each and every one of us, though the propagation of our relatedness towards others, contributes to a world conversation pool which profoundly influences the course of global evolution.  Our individual attitudes are actually building blocks of collective societal sentiment which ultimately shape the course of world history.

In short, our collective way of being and subsequent conversation profoundly affects the world order at large.  Many of our conversations regarding global issues reflect nothing more than our subconsciously derived fears and insecurities as they relate to these issues.  Furthermore, emoting out of fear and insecurity has us to abandon our true essence.  We are subverting our humanity in favor of fear-based sentiment. ‘Societal Codepencency’ examines our true essence, its characteristics and why we stray from our natural expression in favor of a ‘false personality’.  It is this false personality which creates conditions predisposing to many of our societal ills.  In considering the well-being of global society, fundamental discussions involving human relatedness is an overlooked aspect which needs to be considered.  In the age of enhance communication capabilities through social media, mass media and the Internet, prudent and responsible conversation needs to be practiced in order to maintain world which preaches freedom, wealth, physical and emotional health as well as societal bliss.  Acknowledgment of societal codependency as a way of being and how it has contributed towards our present world order may offer insight as to the nature of our global condition and to an alternative path.

Prologue
MY NAME IS Gerald Radlauer. I am a physician practicing internal medicine in Apple Valley, California. I wrote a book in 2005 titled ‘Societal Codependency’ which I would like published at this time.
The inspiration for this book came from a series of medical mission trips I took in Kenya in 2004 and 2005. During these trips, I participated in treating patients in some of the world’s most impoverished areas. In working in these clinics and observing prevalent behavioral patterns, it became quite apparent that the illnesses being treated reflected the surrounding societal conditions. Many of the diseased states which the patients presented with were reflections of unsanitary and crowded conditions. Such conditions occur prevalently in the United States as well. However, a prevalent sentiment in Kenya which is not so prominent in the United States is that of passive dependence. This passive dependence is a reflection of a relationship with dominant forces with local tribes, national rulers and global influences in the present and throughout time. The natural human state is of fierce self dependency in enhancing one’s life. The passive behavior reflects an abandonment of self enhancing behavior due to learned subservient behavior from dominant forces locally, nationally and globally and throughout time.
Such behavior represents a relationship between a dominant force and a subservient population. Such behavior is learned, imprinted and often expressed long after the dominant force is no longer present. Such dominant-subservient relationships are present world wide. The relationships are expressed differently in various parts of the world. In Kenya, where subservient groups are impoverished and without outside resource and influence, forcible submission of a subservient population is easily accomplished resulting in passive subservient behavior in the submissive population. In more affluent parts of the world where subservient groups have access to more resources, forcible submission by dominant forces do not work as easily. Therefore, other expressions in both dominant and subservient groups are observed. However, this dominant subservient relationship exists worldwide and runs the engines of world society. The realization of the prevalence and widespread influence of dominant-submissive relationships in the running of regional, national and global realms inspired the conception of this book.
The book itself introduces basic psychological concepts in explaining natural human tendencies towards the engagement of dominant-submissive relationships. The book details fear and shame based thought as the construct for such relationships. Fear and shame-based sentiment is vital in the codependent relationship. Such a relationship implies perceived personal and group inadequacy and of the inherent need of an outside influence to satisfy the inadequacy. Such relationships involve manipulation, deception and suspicion and are commonplace in all of our lives. Such relationships are also commonplace among groups within regional society as well as in national and international relations. Fear based codependent relationships profoundly impact governmental rule as well as regional, national and global policy.
With world societal life being conducted on fear and shame-based sentiment, societal relationships are inherently strained and highly unstable. In fact, all world societal discord such as war, poverty, famine, persecution, rebellion and isolation can easily be traced back to this human codependency model. Codependency is the root of essentially all personal and societal discord. With world society being so interconnected and with technological and military advancement occurring at a rapid pace, great concern should be expressed over subsequent events which could occur under the constructs of human codependent behavior.
This book was written in 2005 but the concepts are eerily relevant today. My intention is to leave the book as is and allow the reader extrapolate the concepts of the book into today’s world stage. This book is politically non-partisan and urges societal leaders of today as well as the general public to analyze the true motives of our collective thoughts and actions in understanding the true impact of these thoughts and actions on the human world condition. I present this book to the world as a celebration of the human condition as well as an alternative perspective as to the progression and advancement of the human condition. Thank you.
CHAPTER I
Survival and Modern Society
IN CONTEMPLATING GREAT human achievements and accomplishments in world history, we are compelled to recognize epic survival stories. One such story is that of Shackelton’s Antarctic expedition of 1914-1916. The story begins with Sir Ernest Shackleton’s departure from London on a ship called Endurance . Leading a crew of twenty-eight, Shackleton had intended to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent.
The crew on the Endurance stopped in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and South Georgia Island, a small Atlantic British outpost used extensively in the whaling industry at that time. Once departed from South Georgia Island, the crew would head toward Vahsel Bay, a point of land at the southernmost point of the Weddell Sea, east of the Antarctic Peninsula. Once on land, the crew planned to use dogsleds to cross the continent through the South Pole in arm boards toward the Ross Sea on the opposite side of the continent. On the Ross Sea side of the continent, the crew would be picked up by a second ship called the Aurora and be transported out of the Antarctic region. The route from Vahsel Bay to Ross Island was chosen as it was the shortest distance possible over land in the southernmost penetration of open sea on both ends of the continent.
Unfortunately, the extreme southern travel on the Wedell Sea put the ship at high risk of being trapped in the packed ice. This circumstance occurred at the height of Antarctica’s summer January 18, 1915. Stranded on an ice floe drifting away from the mainland, the crew were captives at sea. Upon the destruction and sinking of the Endurance on November 21, 1915 due to shifting ice movement, the crew of twenty-eight were left only with the ship’s supplies, three life boats, and the crew’s dogs.
The northward movement of the ice floe eventually deposited the crew in the vicinity of Elephant Island, a remote barren mountainous crop of land north of the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. From there, a team of six left the other twenty-two members of the crew on Elephant Island and embarked on a rescue mission, in a 22-foot wooden boat with scant supplies on an arduous 800-mile journey across the Drake Passage to South Georgia Island. This incredible journey took the crew across the most turbulent body of water in the world, with the aid of only primitive navigational tools to steer the boat in the direction of a small island in a vast ocean.
Against insurmountable odds, this journey was successful, with the trip spanning seventeen days. After the boat landed, the crew trekked across the mountainous terrain of South Georgia Island before arriving at a whaling station on the east coast of the island. After notifying others of the crew stranded on Elephant Island, expeditions were planned with the intent of rescuing the remaining castaways. After three failed attempts, the Chilean steamer Yelcho successfully reached Elephant Island and recovered the remaining crew. Incredibly, all of the original twenty-eight crew members survived.
The fortunate fate of the crew of the Endurance is an uplifting conclusion to one of the great survival stories of all time. The theme of survival is one which is depicted in a vast array of scenarios throughout world history and among all species of plants and animals inhabiting our planet.
Survival is a directive instinctively expressed by virtually all living species. Individuals attempt to exist long enough to procreate and extend the lineage of the species. Impeding individual survival are environmental barriers such as harsh climates, inhospitable terrain, and fierce competition with other species members and other species for limited resources. Through the annals of time, animal a
