Insights from Chapter 1
#1
I remember the ache of the strain on my fragile neck muscles and the root of my tongue. I was three years old when my mother told me about it. I have tried to remember my babysitter’s face, but all I can remember is the funky ritual.
#2
I was working at a shoe shine shop when I met Steve, the banker, who would poison the core of my family’s life. I didn’t know at the time that the banker would never press another coin into my hand.
#3
I remember the last day I worked in the shoe store, when my stepfather, Henry, was extremely quiet. I didn’t understand his worry or his heartbreak. I loved Henry with all my heart, and he loved me and my mother.
#4
My father was a changed man after he was saved by Mama. He had saved his money and now had something to offer his wife and son. They went back to him, and after a week, he bought the cousin angle and broke out his best cigars and cognac for the thieves.
#5
I had a difficult time dealing with the burglary, as I felt it was my mother’s fault. She had made the decision to keep the cross a secret from me.
#6
I had moved away from home when I was young, and when I met Steve, my old friend, I had thought that I could finally be happy. But Steve turned out to be a pimp, and after he attacked me, he escaped through the catacombs of the Ghetto.
#7
I had begun to play Steve’s favorite game, craps, in the alleys after school. I was impatient with the unusual thickness of his daughter’s maidenhead.
Insights from Chapter 2
#1
I was fascinated by the scene in the red-light district where I saw a white man, with a small but voluptuous black girlfriend. The white man was tenderly caressing Party Time's weapon. I had never seen anything like that before in Rockford.
#2
I met Party Time, a hustler, at a pool hall. I was curious about his methods, so I let him pick my brain about crime. I was eventually able to hustle with him, and we made a lot of money.
#3
There are many Murphy's in the world, and they use great finesse to separate a mark from his or her money. One of the most adept of them is to hit on a trick, making it easy for them to force the sucker to qualify himself and give them everything they want.
#4
The third strike is the mark’s desperate need to relieve himself into a black body. The second is his complete inability to conceive that the black boy before him is intelligent enough to fool him.
#5
I watched as Party was attacked by the Gorilla, and I knew that he was going to be pimping soon after.
