#1

I have seen the magic of stardust in the lives of my family and friends, and I know that we are all a part of the universe. We are literally made out of stardust.

#2

The accusation of being a terrorist can be devastating, and I have had to learn to cope with it.

#3

I am Patrisse Marie Khan-Cullors Brignac. I am a survivor. I am stardust.

#4

I grew up in a largely Mexican neighborhood in California. My mother and I are considered short by our family, and I never grew taller than five feet two. My brothers Paul and Monte are both tall, and I didn’t inherit their height.

#5

I grew up in a household where my mother worked multiple jobs to support us. She was a telemarketer, receptionist, domestic support, and office cleaner.

#6

I remember being nine years old, watching my brothers get arrested by the police. I was behind a broken black wrought-iron gate, unable to help them.

#7

I will never forget the day my brothers and I were harassed by the police. It will shape the way I view the police and the law for the rest of my life.

#8

The first time I am arrested, I am 12 years old. I have to attend summer school because of my math and science grades, and I am angry about it. I smoke some weed.

#9

Middle school was a culture shock for me because I was considered gifted and a star student, but I also had to deal with the race and class differences.

#10

I was accepted to the gifted children's program, while my friend Lisa was not. But Lisa's mother was able to manipulate her address and get her into the standard program, so in the end we are both Millikan students.

#11

I had to change my route to school, as I no longer felt embarrassed about the people who had raised me and given me to the world, as I was a poor Black girl from Van Nuys.

#12

I felt unsure of myself in middle school, and I believe it was because I was no longer the adorable little girl everyone had adored.

#13

The year I turned twelve, I began to realize that being Black and poor defined me more than being bright and hopeful. I had been so ready to learn, but being who I was cost me my life.

#14

For me, the most defining moment of middle school was when I learned that my father was not police, but a man named Gabriel who had been calling the house for the last few months. I wanted to meet my father, and I wanted everything to be the same.
