Chapter 1
Two Governmental legislative ministers meet in the Capulus coffee bar.
‘How are you today, Peter?’
‘Much better than I was over the weekend, thanks Dylan, although it did give me plenty of time to think.’
‘Why, what happened over the weekend?’
‘I had an atrocious dose of what I think was influenza, but thank goodness for Omnia Sanat, as I took one dose when I arose from bed and in less than five minutes, I felt much better.
Omnia Sanat is a miracle cure, and works in seconds.’ Dylan remarked.
‘The Medical profession has improved so much in recent years that it’s difficult to believe the advances they’ve made are real.’
‘Yes, Dylan if you read the medical encyclopaedias, It is amazing how much things have changed. I seem to recall that in the late 1800s or was it the early 1900s a tablet called Asprin was the latest miracle cure for most illnesses although today you never hear it mentioned.
By the way, out of interest, Omnia Sanat is Latin for Cures everything.’
‘As we are aware Peter everything is changing so fast that we must remember the past as best we can. For example, since the disastrous planet-warming events and the melting of the Northern and Southern Ice caps, along with the other Ice-covered regions on this Planet, the water has risen to such an extent that we have, like other countries, lost a significant amount of our shoreline under the rising waters! It’s a terrifying event! And this seawater is still rising.
Some poor souls, especially in the Southern areas of our planet, have even seen their Islands disappear under the waves, and many have moved to our Island in desperation, increasing our population manyfold and therefore the necessity for increased housing.
Our people must realise, this is one of the reasons why these people have moved here. Tragically they’ve lost their dwellings.
Whatever, can you imagine living on an island that you’ve enjoyed all your life, and gradually you notice the tides creeping up the beach and destroying parts of the shoreline, piece by peace?
The tides are rising higher and higher with the desperate and terror-stricken realisation, that your home is disappearing under the waves and there’s nothing you can do to prevent this catastrophe from occurring.
Things you have played with, rocks and shrubs you’ve hidden behind, caves you’ve all hidden in as children. The trees between which your mother tied a cord to hang the washing. Or the trees you climbed to capture the juicy fruit.
A hole would glow with bright cinders while Dad cooked the evening meal of fish or meat.
They were wonderous days, but now they’ve gone, as these Islands have disappeared beneath the rising tides, and most likely some of the elderly residents with it.
Now you will understand why, as a result of the rising waters our people have also had no option but to move further inland. And this has resulted in the desperate need for more housing.
This is so intense that we are seriously running out of areas on which to build.
All those years ago, I would never have believed some of the results of Planet-warming.
Significantly, these days, more people are crowded into much less space; even the Deserts of this planet have disappeared under the plethora of house buildings. And I believe that many of our electorates initially fail to understand the reason why.’
‘Yes, Dylan, many of my electorates initially asked me why we no longer see turbo-jet aeroplanes. And I explained that the plane’s aerodromes were desperately needed to build homes.
The subsequent result was that airports disappeared and therefore there was nowhere to land the Turbo Jet aeroplanes, so now only helicopters are built, and there are specially allotted spaces, designed for them to land on top of houses.
Whatever, there have been many complaints, as although the houses are soundproofed against helicopter noise, the atrocious din from these Transportation helicopters is near deafening.
These particular helicopters can carry over 500 passengers and crew and have quadruple helicopter masts so you can imagine the racket, no matter what soundproofing is in place.
If you can remember the old double-decker red busses, well these helicopters are about seven or eight times the size, so you can understand their enormity. Not only that, but these helicopter landing pads collect rainwater that seeps into the houses below, and costs a fortune to dry. Even when the premises are dry, there are still many ongoing claims for ruined belongings. And as you can imagine this is a costly and time-consuming affair.
Oh, yes, and then it rains once more and the whole process starts again.
It’s yet another example of the Legislative telling the electorate that they’ve done what they promised – but they fail to mention that it doesn’t work!
These helicopter landing pads are everywhere. It seems as though we turn our heads, and when we turn them back, there’s another landing pad.
Not only that but they are so abundant, that instead of the busses travelling along the roads, these Transporters fly above us, wherever we look and mark my words, Peter, it won’t be long before we require additional forms of lighting beneath the clouds because the vast number of helicopters will make it seem as though the night is approaching and our solar powered lighting won’t be anywhere near sufficient. There are hundreds, probably thousands of these Transporters, that darken the Towns sky.’
‘Now, you’re being silly Dylan.’
‘You think so, Peter? Well please tell me what isn’t changing.’
‘Of course Dylan, you are right, I remember when I was a child, my Grandparents told me about when they were children, playing in things they called rivers and lakes, but long ago these waterways and inland seas disappeared as the necessity for houses dramatically increased and therefore they were filled in and built over. It’s funny that there are no films or visual recordings of these waterways.’
‘And whose fault was that Peter, Ours! After all, the records show it was our Legislative that decided to fill these waterways in, as we desperately needed these areas for housing.
You must remember that there were instances, many of them, where homes were shared by considerably more families than intended. For example, thirty people occupying a house, under normal circumstances, intended for no more than half a dozen.
And then of course all gardens were crowded with other people living in tents and garden sheds, and in many instances, it’s a horrible thought, but buckets were used as latrines.
This whole situation was unbelievable and nothing we would have imagined, say five decades before, and then this unpleasant outcome is thrust upon us.
And there were certain factions, that we thought might rebel as a result of lost lakes and waterways, such as freshwater and what they call sport anglers who fished for Salmon and Trout, often paying exorbitant water rates to fish these selected waters and now these waters have disappeared for good.
I can understand the annoyance of Anglers, sports anglers or not, these people are by far the largest contingent of opponents to what the Legislative is doing.
Our internal Secret Service uncovered information that Anglers, one of the largest groups of active participants in the country, we’re talking about bringing the Legislative down, either through the ballot box or a Coup.
The Coup preparation was well-advanced, as secret training sessions, and organised outfits of men, and women, were meeting regularly in secret.
Therefore when the Legislative discovered what was happening they introduced a Law that not only sent perpetrators to Jail but they also decided to make it illegal for anybody to possess anything that might remind anyone of past pleasures and activities, such as films or equipment that might have been used in the participants’ activity.
This was just in case it reminded the people of what we were destroying, no matter how much we needed these areas for houses.’
‘Yes Dylan, what a load of killjoys. And it doesn’t take a superbrain to remember the disruption in the Legislative.
Although I understood, as freshwater is scarce in comparison with what it was for my grandparents a few decades before, our engineers, found a means of re-routing the water into underground reservoirs, where this essential liquid
