Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The machine was controlled by a brake acting on the guide strips. This elevator was not provided with any automatic con trolling devices, could move at great speed, and the passengers were entirely at the mercy of the operator. It soon fell into disfavor, and the field was left to the slower steam elevator.
