Description

This bilingual dictionary is the third book of a series of three books dealing with artillery and its environment, both within a joint framework, and within the framework of a specific Service. It includes topography and meteorology among the different aspects of artillery environment, both for conventional artillery and for guided artillery. Within this framework, space plays an important role and all the more as operations can be carried out from space today. As regards artillery, this terminology includes what is useful to operate within a national framework and within an international framework (coalitions, NATO) within an ever-increasing global environment. This dictionary includes more than 4,000 words and phrases in English and in French. It also includes about 2,300 English acronyms and 380 French ones.

Foreword by General François Lecointre Bilingual dictionary devoted to artillery
For the first time, artillery was present on a battlefield at the French defeat of Crecy, in 1346. Progressively, it was to come out on top and it was to become a decisive weapon in 1453 from the battle of Castillon on-wards. From that time, technical progress was to accelerate in order to improve the nature and the size of the cannonball, control its trajectory, master its use and result into victory. As a true revolution in the art of war, the use of cannons also resulted into deep changes regarding codes : men of war had to become trained and well-educated in order to master the implementation of a scientific weapon, which was favored by the Renais-sance. On the other hand, the proprieties of hand-to-hand fighting were broken, and new military values succeeded to knights’ heroism, in order not to be pinned down under enemy fire, before being ordered to attack. Then, cohesion and obedience had to be developed. Eventually, artillery reinforced the role of a centralized state, because only the state could af-ford to have a modern artillery and maintain it. With Louis 14th, it even became theultima ratio regum, the kings’ last argument.
As artillery had become a decisive branch, it happened to be an exacting science and it required to permanently adjust its use and its performance to keep ascendancy over the adversary. In 1630, the reform carried out by Gustav Adolph, the Swedish king, sent all current artillery systems to the Middle Ages, by creating a mobile and light system that favored quantity and maneuverability. Nicknamed “the father of modern war”, his teaching was about to reach a climax with Napoléon Bonaparte. Indeed, the Emperor was deeply influenced by the thought of military thinkers from the 18th century, and he genially applied the principles that had come out a few decades before him, in particular those dealing with
