This bilingual dictionary is the first book of a series of three books dealing with artillery and its environment, both within a joint environment, and within the environment of a specific Service. It includes the various aspects of conventional artillery, guns, howitzers, and rockets in a land environment, guns in a naval environment, and bombs in an air environment. As regards artillery, this terminology includes what is useful to operate within a national framework and within an international framework (coalitions, NATO) within an everincreasing global environment. This dictionary includes more than 10,000 words and phrases in English and in French. It also includes about 4,900 English acronyms and 1,000 French ones.

This dictionary includes more than 10,000 words and phrases in English and in French. It
also includes about 4,900 English acronyms and 1,000 French ones.
Jean-Claude LALOIRE is graduated from ESSEC (economics and
business management) and ISUP (mathematics).
As a linguist, he has been both a translator/ interpreter in the French
Ministry of Defense and a teacher at advanced military education level:
Staf College/CAS3, French Joint War College (formerly CID), Center
for Higher Military Studies (CHEM), and “Gendarmerie Nationale”. He has forty years’
experience. As a translator, he has worked more specifcally with CDEF (French Army’s Forces
Employment Doctrine Center).
He is an OLRAT (French Army Reserve language-expert ofcer) Lieutenant Colonel. He is a
Commander in the Order of Merit.

Bilingual dictionary devoted to artillery
For the first time, artillery was present on a battlefield at the French
defeat of Crecy, in 1346. Progressively, it was to come out on top and it
was to become a decisive weapon in 1453 from the battle of Castillon
onwards. From that time, technical progress was to accelerate in order to
improve the nature and the size of the cannonball, control its trajectory,
master its use and result into victory. As a true revolution in the art of
war, the use of cannons also resulted into deep changes regarding codes :
men of war had to become trained and well-educated in order to master
the implementation of a scientific weapon, which was favored by the
Renaissance. On the other hand, the proprieties of hand-to-hand fighting
were broken, and new military values succeeded to knights’ heroism, in
order not to be pinned down under enemy fire, before being ordered to
attack. Then, cohesion and obedience had to be developed. Eventually,
artillery reinforced the role of a centralized state, because only the state
could afford to have a modern artillery and maintain it. With Louis 14th, it
even became the ultima ratio regum, the kings’ last argument.

As artillery had become a decisive branch, it happened to be an
exacting science and it required to permanently adjust its use and its
performance to keep ascendancy over the adversary. In 1630, the reform
carried out by Gustav Adolph, the Swedish king, sent all current artillery
systems to the Middle Ages, by creating a mobile and light system that
favored quantity and maneuverability. Nicknamed “the father of modern
war”, his teaching was about to reach a climax with Napoléon Bonaparte.

Indeed, the Emperor was deeply influenced by the thought of military
thinkers from the 18th century, and he genially applied the principles that
had come out a few decades before him, in particular those dealing with artillery : he required that artillery would deliver moving barrages “at the
right place, and at the right time” – unexpectedly, of course – in order to
crush the enemy resilience. As he was an artilleryman, his victories still
appear as outstanding masterpieces in the art of war.

Eventually, the power of artillery was shown in the 20th century
through a couple of world conflicts to an extent that had never been seen
before in the conduct of war. More globally, a generalization of its use
occurred in crises and conflicts, and it became even used in new areas with
guided artillery.

So, following the history of artillery means that we penetrate into
battles, and narratives and handbooks about it ; but we also penetrate into
production systems and the impact of technical improvements. In it, we
discover its ever-increasing power in the conduct of war, its impact on
science, and its influence in the conduct of nations’ policies. We easily
conclude that monographs and cross-functional studies about artillery result
into fundamental elements to analyze military facts, and therefore the life
of States.

By issuing this series of French-English dictionaries devoted to artillery,
Lieutenant Colonel (R) Jean-Claude LALOIRE gives a reference university
tool to the largest number of people, in order to make it easier to access
to the English language. Renowned for his meticulous work, his linguistic
talents and his experience in the service of the armed forces, he enables
us today to seize the slightest differences as well in research works, as in
the passionate reading of books dealing with artillery, and written in
