Article by Louanne Piccolo
ELIZA, 37, postural alignment specialist
from Thatcham, England, UK
When I hear the word ‘Indigenous’, I always think of
colonisation. Australia was colonised like many other
countries in the world. Indigenous Australians suffered
like the native people in North America when European
travellers arrived in their country and took their land.
It was shameful!
BENJAMIN, 42, ski instructor from Banff,
Alberta, Canada
1I imagine people living in the outback . They have a
very rich culture and a special relationship with their
environment. They also speak several languages that
are different from all the other languages I know. They
are exotic and beautiful to me. I would like to learn
more about them.
1 The outback is the vast interior of Australia, arid and more remote than the bush.
CHRISTIANE, 60, retired bank manager
from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
I’m South African but I moved to Australia 10 years
ago. I lived in South Africa during apartheid. When
I hear the words ‘Indigenous Australians’, I think of
the injustice that colonisation caused to the native
people in this country. The Aborigines have a similar
history to native South Africans.

I think of the fres in Australia. I read
an article on an Aboriginal technique
to control bushfres. It’s a very old
skill. Basically, to prevent big
bushfres, you must make lots
of small fres that clear an area.
Maybe the Australian government can ask Indigenous
Australians for help?
MATT, 32, medical student from Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, USA
When I hear those two words, I realize that I don’t
know a lot about Australia or
native Australian people at all!
Everything about Australia is
so foreign to me. I think that
the Indigenous Australians
must have an interesting
culture and a unique language,
like all native people.
NOEL, 53, computer programmer
from Cork, Co. Cork, Ireland
Didgeridoos! I’m passionate about wind
instruments – I play the fute and the trombone.
So, I’m very interested in the didgeridoo,
which the Aborigines created. It’s a very
sophisticated instrument and I admire the
Indigenous Australians for making it.
It makes beautiful music and I want to learn
to play it.
