Amongst these 140 600 agricultural holdings, - 40% made use of less than one AWU, while 13% made use of 2 or more AWUs; - 22% used less than 5 ha, while 1% used 100 ha or more; - 14% were mixed holdings, while 86% were specialised: dairies 27%, dairies combined with cattle fattening and rearing 13%, cereals, oil seed and protein crops 12%, cattle fattening and rearing 8%, sheep, goats and other grazing livestock 8%, vineyards 5%, pigs and poultry 5%, field cropping 4%, fruit orchards 2% and horticulture 1% (of which 74% under glass); - about 12% practised organic farming.
In Austria, in December 2003 about 140600 agricultural holdings had an economic size of at least 1 ESU(European Size Unit)*, which means about 14% decline compared to 1999. - These holdings employed 161 500 AWUs (annual work units), the equivalent of 161 500 persons working full time; - they made use of 2.7 million ha of agricultural area, which is on average 19.3 hectare per holding (compared to 17 ha in 1999).

Amongst the 140 thousand sole holders - 34% were women; - 22% were aged 55 or more, and 14% younger than 35 years; - 18% had another gainful activity as major occupation.
