COAL
Consumption: Gross inland consumption of coal in the EU-25 fell by 11.3
million tonnes (- 3.1 %) between 2004 and 2005, from 363.2 million tonnes to
351.9 million tonnes.
Primary production: In 2005 Poland was the largest coal producer in the EU-
25, with 98 million tonnes. It accounted for 57 % of the total EU output of 171
million tonnes.
Imports:
Total imports of coal for EU-25 remained stable, 218 million
tonnes in 2004 compared with 217 million tonnes in 2005.
There was little year-on-year change in extra-Community imports, which
totalled 194 million tonnes for EU-25. South Africa was the most important
country of origin with 26 % of total extra-Community imports.
COKE-OVEN COKE
Production: EU-25 production of coke-oven coke fell over the two years in
question by 4.1 % or 1.7 million tonnes.
Total imports: Imports fell between 2004 and 2005 by some 2.1 million
tonnes or almost 17.4 % for EU-25.
