ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dr. Cheryl Rock is an Author, Musician, Martial Artist, Metaphysician and Professor, as well as a Food Scientist who specializes in Nutritional Biochemistry. Her areas of emphasis are the studies of (1) Ethnomedicine and (2) phytonutrients and their effects on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), Colon Cancer and Type 2 Diabetes.
Additionally, she specializes in Martial Science; an integration of internal Martial Arts from a health and wellness approach, using principles of Food Science, Martial Arts philosophy as well as Bagua Metaphysics. Specifically, she utilizes the Bagua Energy Map and the Five-Element Theory as a framework to educate people of how Eastern (i.e., Bagua) and Western (i.e., Food Science – Nutritional Biochemistry) concepts intersect through diet.
Her philosophy of life is to help others experience holistic health and wellness practices in their daily lives through transformation and self-mastery. She seeks to help others achieve this goal as a result of her own personal experiences and principles as a practitioner of Korean Martial Arts (Hapkido) as well as Brazilian Jujitsu (BJJ) under the mentorship of Professor Ross Hewitt. Moreover, Dr. Rock has acquired her 1 st Dan Black Belt in Hapkido (Korean Martial Arts) under the mentorship of Master Louis Kim at the National Hapkido Center (NHC), USA. In addition, she is a certified Bagua consultant from the School of Bagua and Metaphysics, USA under the mentorship of Carl E. Stevens, Jr.

I would like to acknowledge my mentor Carl E. Stevens, Jr. for introducing me to his unique Bagua system. I was able to transform my life in so many ways: mind, spirit and body using his system. In so much that his work has inspired me to conceptualize “The Bagua Plate” using the Bagua Energy Maps (i.e., Octagon and Magic Square). This concept is intended to serve as a practical tool, framework as well as an innovative approach to foster a healthy relationship with food and a wellness mindset to readers of this book.
WHY I WROTE THIS BOOK
My philosophy of life is to help others experience true abundance through holistic health and wellness practices. I help others achieve this is through my own personal experiences and principles as a practitioner of Korean Martial Arts ( Hapkido ) and Brazilian Jujitsu as well as my expertise being a Doctor of Food Science and a Bagua consultant. Hapkido is coined from three words which are the following: (1) “Hap” – Harmony or coming together; ( 2) “Ki”– Universal Life Force and (3) “Do” - Life Path or Method. Therefore, the fundamental goal of Hapkido is to harmonize ones’ mental, emotional, spiritual and physical well being in every aspect of life. Utilizing Hapkido principles, in my internal Martial Arts practice, my main focus is to facilitate health and wellness with others through food first approach and harmonization of colors and tastes from food using the principles of the Bagua Energy Map. Specifically, I study health and wellness focusing on the fundamentals of the Bagua Systems, which is based on the I Ching (i.e., book of changes) and Feng Shui that are prominent components of Martial Arts Philosophy. In this book, I use a combination of these subject areas which I term “Martial Science” to help readers focus on cultivation, activation, and maximization of Chi as well as health and wellness through Food Science.
Moreover, according to research, cases of mortality and morbidity especially in the Western society, has been linked to major chronic illnesses such as Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and Type 2 Diabetes with diet being not only the largest contributor, but also one of the significant modifiable factors. Additionally, through the wealth of nutrition-based information available, consumers are becoming more aware of the association of health and disease, which influences their eating behaviors. However, with the abundance of nutrition information to guide consumers about diet in relation to avoidance of certain food groups, there is limited focus on Food Science and metaphysical aspects of food choices. Additionally, not all information that has been published or made available is valid and may be the leading cause of misinformation about the food we eat.
As previously mentioned, being a trained Food Scientist with a specialization in Nutritional Biochemistry as well as certified in Bagua metaphysics, I am dedicated to helping consumers in their journey of their health and wellness. I do this by using established frameworks and practical tools, which I have conceptualized, and practice using metaphysical principles, which are introduced in this book.
Last, what inspired me to write this book was my Black Belt journey in Hapkido during 2018-2022. Writing this book has been a source of enlightenment where I used these principles to activate my Chi and nourish my body during my training. I believe that the real value of Martial Arts from a scientific perspective is to help individuals harness a healthy lifestyle in general. The scientific aspect of Martial arts in terms of health and wellness is often overlooked because the self-defense nature of the art form is frequently emphasized. In brief, my book introduces both Martial Arts philosophy and Martial Science through conceptual tools of “The Bagua Plate”, which aims to help people establish a balanced diet through the science of taste and colorful diets.
