Part I
Incipit lamentatio Jeremiæ prophetæ:
Here beginneth the lamentation of Jeremiah the prophet:
ALEPH. Quomodo sedet sola civitas plena populo: facta est quasi vidua domina gentium,
princeps provinciarum facta est sub tributo.
I. How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people! How is she become as a widow!
She that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, How is she become tributary!
BETH.
II. She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks; among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her:
all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies.
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return unto the Lord thy God.—Lamentations of Jeremiah 1, verses 1&2
Part II
De lamentatione Jeremiæ prophetæ:
From the lamentation of Jeremiah the prophet:
GHIMEL.
invenit requiem.
III. Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude; she dwelleth among the heathen, she
findeth no rest.
DALETH.
IV. All her persecutors overtook her within the straits: they mourn, because none comes to the solemn assembly. All her
gates are desolate, her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she herself is in bitterness.
HETH.
tribulantis.
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, convertere ad Dominum Deum tuum.
V. Her adversities are become the head, her enemies prosper; for the Lord hath afflicted her for the multitude of her
transgressions; her children a are gone into captivity before the adversary.
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return unto the Lord thy God.—Lamentations of Jeremiah 1, verses 3–5The Lamentations of Jeremiah Lamentations 1: verses 1&2 Thomas Tallis

* The often published musica ficta g-sharp is incorrect. To sing g-sharp here is unacceptable
since it produces two consecutive melodic half steps in the middle of the phrase.5
